So, who is in Irene's path?

The thing about irene - it was over a 24 hour event. It started raining about 3 am yesterday and didn't quit until 6 am today. Knocked a few trees down but the storm surge was not so bad and overall it was pretty weak

We did not lose power here in Manhattan, NYC (although there may be some who did) Peak wind ag LGA is 58 and now gust peaks are down to the 40+ range. The radar picture indicates that the eye, or its remains, will be over us shortly.

That said, the roads are flooded, the transit system is closed, etc. It will take a while for things to get back to normal. I expect to be working from home tomorrow.

Lost power twice. Once at 1:12 AM for 20 minutes, and again at about 3 AM for an hour plus. Kudos to the power company.

The winds picked up after about 11 last night and the rains died down. Had about 3 inches of rain where I live.

No damage here, no major damage in the neighborhood except a couple of trees down.

Now to go check in with my mother & see how things fared where she lives.

Power was out from 10pm to 8am.
Losses:
1 decorative tree (12ft) in the front yard
1 pack of terry cloth towels to mop up some water that pushed through the floor in the furnace room

Could have been worse. Couple of neighbors homes with walkout basements have taken on some water, mostly because the drain in the stairwell was clogged with leaves.

My plane had been at Twitchell's Airport 3B5 for installation of a 406 ELT. Friday, with Irene about to barrel up to New England, I was on the phone(the plane sitting outside up there). "We're double-tieing everything down," was the word.
Friday and Saturday I was working SAFETY at Great State of Maine Air Show(Sunday was cancelled). August 31 I drove to Twitchell's. They had received, on Sunday, high winds, torrential rain, thunder & lightning. On the 31st I got in 1½ hours of flight time, during which I made my first-ever two landings on grass. Maybe that was to celebrate my August 29 AME -- good for another two years so my disbelieving "friends" can continue to say, "How is it that the FAA endangers my life while it allows a half-blind/half deaf man to fly that airplane up there?"

Irene was good to me, as was Twitchell's. When I arrived there I learned that the crew had taken me off tie-down and stuffed the Skyhawk into a hangar. I'll be flying again Friday morning.

RIP, Captain Ron Ames.

While I was walking to the hangar I saw a pristine yellow Cub. Seeing the "Spirit of Matinicus" painted on the side I knew immediately that it was Captain Ron Ames' plane from out on Matinicus Island. Then I was shocked to learn that he's no longer with us. The day I took the pictures in this post was just one day after Ron had received in the mail his new certification to get back flying, following the long delay re his heart surgery "grounded" status. Then I sadly learned that just six months after I took the photos he was diagnosed with a brain tumor which brought about his death. THAT just isn't fair! Sorry, Captain Ron. You are missed.

Power went out at about 6pm Saturday night in Annapolis and we didn't get ours back again until this evening at 9pm. Many very large trees down in our 'hood with several utility poles sheared off and broken wires everywhere. We had a couple of 100 year old trees fall near our house across the road and didn't hit anything but the poles and utility lines. Some nearby not so luck with a deck swiped off the house and a car smushed. The Big news is that we had no surge and so all the waterfront folks were spared that damage. The wind damage was pretty bad in our area but surprisingly little injury or loss of life. We'll be running chainsaws, splitters, and shredders for days now.

No damage at Lee airport.

Here in Winston-Salem, we'll probably get some rain and flooding, but no winds.

Makes me want to take a trip to Wilimington real quickly....

Nick! You're in Winston Salem! I had a flight there last week. Flew over the storm. I was looking for something to do. I wish I knew you were there. I would have looked you up!

Scott Dennstat just posted a NWS picture that shows that LA and MS are due for 2 FEET of RAIN. Holy !!!!!

We think California is going to fall into the Pacific. Maybe the Gulf will claim the southeast coast.

46 hours without power from Sunday at 2PM. All in all, not bad. The oak out front shed some of its branches, one of which stressed the high voltage power line until it broke.
Considering some are still without, I did pretty well.

BTW, Contents of fridges and freezers are insured, take pictures/video as you throw things out if you intend to claim over around $400.
