Wifi only? 3G? WHICH 3G?

You have to choose a carrier for the 3G access. I'm thinking I'd get ATT, because it works in Europe but I still haven't decided if this will go on trips with me because while I can download photos to view, I can't do anything with them other than view them at that point - right?

If I get ATT 3G and decide I hate it, I can still get a VZ mifi, right? Or would it be better to get wifi only and pick the carrier later for mifi?

augh!

I am getting the 64gig AT&T version.

I already have an AT&T iPhone and I understand that I can simply swap the sim when I need data on the iPad. Although I do not think I will need a lot of 3G data as I am pretty sure the WiFI side will suffice for most application.

I am getting it to be a EFB for the most part. I will probably use other apps on it, but with my laptop almost always in tow and an iPhone I do not think it will replace those items, but we will see.

I've had a 64GB 3G ATT since middle of last year. My wife has a 32GB WiFi only.

Which do you prefer?

Scott - I figure in for a penny, in for a pound. I'm getting the bells and whistles one. I don't have ATT for anything but I do have VZ FIOS at home.

However, any 3G I have MUST BE month to month or pay as you go, whatever. I would only use it on trips b/c I can use wifi at home.

None. Still waiting for a good Android tablet. I think there's one coming soon that will finally make me jump.

What's an iPad? ;)

I don't have a monthly cycle that requires me to need an iPad.

I got the 32Gb 3g+WiFi version because that's what ForeFlight recommended, and so far it is just what I need. I have not bought the AT&T service because I don't feel like paying that much for something I'd use that little, and so far haven't found any ForeFlight-based reason to regret that choice, including any reason why to regret not waiting for the iPad2 (to which I do not plan to upgrade).

However, I will say that I'm interested in jailbreaking my root to hotspot my Droid (or whatever the correct phraseology is) and have my iPad communicate with the cell world via my Droid2 cell phone via my existing Verizon mobile phone/data service.

Meh on Android. Until the equipment vendors sus out the OS upgrade issues I will avoid Android. There are too many versions out there and not all the apps will support all the versions. This limits what you can and cannot do too much.

iCycle you mean.

I'd imagine getting the AT&T (GSM) model would be appropriate if you want to use 3G data in Europe.

In the iPad 2 event, they showed a screen shot of the new iMove app that had new sharing options -- to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, and CNN iReport. I've not seen any of the official updates to iOS 4.3, so perhaps the Photos app might inherit something similar. Right now on my iPhone, I can only email, MMS, or upload photos to Mobile Me.

This is indeed how it works.

I have heard the AT&T international data plans for iPad were obscenely expensive. I don't know what the options are to buy a local SIM card for data when you get there...

Hmmm, I think they cut down the sim card in the iPad. Anyway, its a tiny little thing.

To keep this somewhat aviation-related: I'm gonna guess the reason ForeFlight would recommend the 3G model was because the GPS in the iPad is actually in the 3G chipset. Which is kind of odd, because their website also recommends an external GPS receiver because the one in the iPad is not "aviation grade."

You don't get GPS with the Wi-Fi only models, so plan ahead if you think you'll need GPS functionality.

Edit: I should temper that statement that it applies to the original iPad models. Haven't seen the internals of the iPad 2, so it's possible something has changed in how GPS is done.

However, I will say that I'm interested in jailbreaking my root to hotspot my Droid (or whatever the correct phraseology is) ...

Close enough for government work.

Which makes an interesting conundrum:

1. Laptop is still better for photography, for me which means it may still be the choice on trips that are photography based. Laptop is 3 lbs versus new iPad. Which one is more likely to go on trips? Either/or? This last two-day jaunt to Paris I took no laptop to cut down on weight. A 1 lb iPAD may have gone with me.

2. I have a berry that works in Europe which means I get emails on the fly. Can google on the fly. I won't be carrying an iPAD around all day, but a berry I do carry. Not weight at this point, but size. Also, I have a 40 bucks a month Sprint plan for intl data on my berry - unlimited.

3. Re: number 2, the iPAD would likely sit in the hotel for use when I get back to the hotel, assuming I even have it with me. Many hotels already have wifi (see: laptop usage).

4. Given the above - who has the better data plan? This iPad will be used away from home, for sure - but will I use it in Europe at all, and if so, would it only be in the hotel anyway? Should I pick a data plan that is better for the times I will use it in the US?

The prhaseology, which will help you with finding the steps to do it, is to "Root your device."

Be careful in doing so - you void your warranty, and by having root access, you open the possibility to misconfiguring your device to oblivion (bricking the device).

Good NEWS EVERYBODY!

The new iPad2 has 3 gyroscopes inside!

Just imagine the application for aviation applications!

Why,... you could mount it right on the panel and use it as an EFIS and GPS and get attitude and position and awareness and terrian warnings and all of your charts ACTIVE!...

...and it has this fine, amazingly designed cover!

The cover just grabs on with amazing tiny magnets that are built in to the iPad at the top and stays in place with magnets at the bottom.

ISN'T THAT GREAT?

Yessss, magnets.

Yes. Inside the iPad.

Where are you going?

Q about the gyroscopes - what exactly are those good for, in general, in an iPad meant for the general populace? Why did they add them, etc.

Games.

(and so Mike could post pictures of Prof. Farnsworth)

But that 56 day cycle can be eased with one.:D

I've got a 16GB iPad. My kids bought it for me for Christmas.

I've already got that taken care of with a windows mobile PC and panel "mounted" touch screen.

Not the Xoom, I take it?

The Xoom looks promising, but I want to know how the upgrades will work with it. The last thing I want is to get locked to a specific version of Android without hope for getting the new versions as they come out.

Correct -- I do not want an external GPS for it.

This statement came from the RV site I read:

" We are becoming more and more vulnerable the more dependent we are on these devices and the internet. They have become essential tools but we are not in control of them. It's not the computer, 'Hal', who takes over the spaceship but cyber-pirates and malware jocks. And Hal's apps can be remotely removed, altered or reprogrammed to do just about anything. Holy Sci-Fi thriller! It's scary."

True? not true? thoughts of the learned ones here ?

I have a simple flip phone, with every thing turned off except the ability to talk.

Oh, goody, another way to erase credit card & hotel room key mag stripes. :rolleyes2: It's bad enough with a blackberry (been locked out of hotel room more than once as a result....)

How about that little dial at the top of the instrument panel?

Look for a blog page with step-by-step instructions on how to open up the iPad2 to remove the magnets and it won't be a task for any mere mortal.

So does anyone know for sure about the GPS in the iPad 2 vs. the WiFi only version? With the hotspot feature of iOS 4.3, there's no need for the iPad 3G service if you have an iPhone 4 if I'm reading the specs right. One of the reasons I never bought the first iPad was because I thought it was stupid to have to buy a 3G data plan for it when my phone is sitting right next to it. I guess for $130 more it's worth it to get the GPS in the 3G version if that's the only way to do it.

On a related note, does anyone know if the folks making that real attitude indicator ever got the quirks out of it. I tried it on my iPhone 4 and it never worked right in the plane and there's no real reason it shouldn't have.

You never had to purchase the dataplan for the 3G and the 3G version did also contain WiFi. You could take the sim out of your iPhone, insert it into the iPad and you would be off and running with data.

The deal with iPad2 is that if you want assisted GPS you have to have the 3G version.

If you don't care about video chat or games (gyroscope) and just want a toy is it better to go for an old discounted iPad? Actually I can't think of any practical reason to get one so I could go for a $200-300 toy but not a $700-800 one.

If all you want the iPad for is to be your EFB and flight planning device, I've seen nothing which suggests that a discounted iPad 1 with 32Gb and 3g+WiFi (the configuration recommended by ForeFlight) isn't all you need, and maybe even more than you need (some folks seem to feel 16 Gb is enough, although that may depend on chart coverage area, and if you don't need the little airplane moving across your charts, maybe the 3g isn't necessary, either).

Any idea on how cheap the 1st gen iPads will be now?
