And people can easily stop stores from being open on TG by not shopping.

What's your point? Lots of people work thanksgiving. Oh this is PoA...maybe ATC will resonate.

Nurses, doctors, truckers, McDonalds, 911 dispatchers, FBOs, airlines, 7-11, charter pilots, presidents, (not congress), prison guards, toll booth operators, TSA, farmers, CBP, police, sheriffs, Highway Patrol, NASA, CIA, FBI, Military, home security monitoring, plumbers, A/C repair, ...

The list goes on forever. I bet y'all can help add more. Point is, I don't give two turds about Walmart workers. They chose a life style that landed the, there. I don't shop Walmart...ever. My hands are clean of that disaster.

Did you enjoy the hoopla made by the media with out any consideration of those who must work for our safety.

I've worked plenty of holidays, in all sorts of types of jobs. I'll be on-call this entire holiday season. I could care less if WalMart, Target, or anyone else is open or closed.

Christmas Day at the gas station was the best. People actually stopped for 30 seconds to chat with the kid in the box (me) instead of just throwing money or a credit card through the window and scowling, like the other 364 days a year. It's one of the reasons I make a point to chat with gas station attendants if I have to go inside. Not just on one day a year, either.

I worked one long before there were pump-based-credit card readers... nowadays we all just swipe and leave, most of the time, I guess.

Oh well, I have worked my fair share of holidays. They will get over it.

I know what Tom's saying, but I disagree. There's no relationship to soldiers in a war zone and retail employees working on a significant national holiday.

As for the "they deserve it" comments....no they don't. The fact that some folks (soldiers, doctors, nurses, etc.) have to work doesn't make it right that Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenney, etc. employees should have to work. There are very few days retailers have traditionally closed their doors so that employees could spend quality time with their families. At this rate it's only a matter of time before they'll be working Christmas and Easter also.

We continually talk about eroding values in this country. This is one of them.

I normally like your posts, too, dangit.

I worked at Wal-Mart for seven years during high school and college and it was miserable. I'm told it hasn't gotten any better over the years. Back when I worked there the work week started on Saturday. Many times the schedule wouldn't be posted until Friday night so you couldn't make advance plans of any kind. You never knew what time you'd be getting off work. If someone from the office was coming into town you'd be there stocking and straightening shelves until 1 a.m. If you were scheduled to work 8-5 on Saturday but business was slow you'd be sent home and told to come back to work the 11-1 rush, then sent home and told to come back to work the 4-5 rush. The store manager, Ron Dannoldson, once poked me (an 18 YO student who needed the job badly!) in the chest while scolding me for something, I don't recall what, only that it was something one of my co-workers had done. He was one aisle over laughing his ass off about it, and it would have been funny otherwise. Today, of course, I'd snap his finger off. But back then you just had to take it.

It's a miserable place to work for almost no money. Yes, people who work there are fortunate to have a job, but they also deserve to be treated like adults and to be shown kindness when warranted. It's not like they have a lot else going for them in life.

Gerhardt! You communist! You must know that the poor must work harder so that the rich can get richer... if they don't like being under the foot of Wal*Mart they can leave to find another job but not get food stamps while they try... But since Wal*Mart doesn't even pay a livable wage, they are probably already on them... so thats good.

If it wasn't a miserable, low paying job theb a lot of currently successful people may have been lulled into still working there.

I can't stand shopping at Walmart and I rarely go there. But I know a lot of people that shop there because that is the only place they can afford.

They provide entry level positions to many people.
They provide a way for poor people to buy things they may not other wise be able to afford.

Why do you desire to hurt those poor people? Perhaps you would prefer they live of the dole instead.

So vote with your money and don't shop there, especially on turkey day.

I'm in the "boo hoo" crowd as well, I think the only holiday I have never worked is Christmas. Growing up my dad was working every other holiday. I get to look forward to a life where Angie does similar, she's working 12hrs Thursday and likely 20+ on Christmas.

I'll probably be working this whole Thanksgiving holiday as well. I have to upgrade my computer server and the application that runs on it. In the meantime I will be paying my whole staff for NOT working on Thursday AND FRIDAY.

I think Walmart's labor practices in most cases stink, but I don't have any issues with businesses being open or people working on holidays. This may be blasphemous but

Thanksgiving is just a random day. You can celebrate it whenever you want. My family typically celebrates it the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We buy fresh turkey for pennies on the dollar and it feels just the same. And after we're done eating, the world is still going on and we're not subjected to having to stare at each other, get drunk, or fight for the rest of the evening (not that we would).

I'm sure there are plenty of hourly folks who appreciate another day to make a few bucks.

P.S. If you really want your head to explode, consider celebrating Christmas on January 6th. Free christmas trees, and nearly everything is Christmas related is 1/2 off or more.

They actually already do... because of their low pay most employees of Wal*Mart also qualify for food stamps. Wal*Mart is basically subsidizing their pay system with the welfare program... so it's costing tax payers more money because of their unrealistic pay scale.

I like it, but then again I would

Full disclosure: the Mrs. would never in a million years let me "move" Christmas. I can get away with Thanksgiving because she's Canadian and Thanksgiving there is a relatively minor holiday set on the same day we Americans celebrate Columbus day. That and she hates turkey.

The 6th is our anniversary so she might go for it and its my birthday so I like it!

Wal-Mart's employees should work on Thanksgiving since many of them can't afford to buy a turkey anyway. Wal-Mart...having food drives for their own employees:

A second Wal-Mart location in Ohio is holding an employee food drive for workers who are unable to afford Thanksgiving dinner.
The Wal-Mart in Franklin confirmed to Business Insider that it is asking employees to donate to other workers in need.

"A lot of associates can't even afford to buy a small turkey," Ricki Hahn, a seven-year employee of Wal-Mart, told the station.

News of a similar food drive for a Wal-Mart located 200 miles away in Canton sparked outrage earlier this week. Activists say the drive proves that the retailer's wages are too low to provide for basic needs.

Wal-Mart says the food drive has been taken out of context and that the company is proud of the wages it pays.

"We're proud of the pay and benefits at Walmart, but this issue has nothing to do with how much we pay our associates," spokesman David Tovar said in an email. "This story is simply about people being good neighbors, taking care of each other store by store, associate by associate."

"It’s unfortunate that an act of human kindness has been taken so out of context," Tovar added.

"We're proud of the pay and benefits at Walmart" That's one of the funniest statements I've read in a LONG time.

I see a flaw in that logic but I can't quite put my finger on it. I have a real problem with paying the lowest rung workers a middle class salary. All it does is drive the price of goods and services up to a point to where they still can't afford them, and it ends up displacing more people than it displaced before due to inflation.

Yep. There's a new term, "living wage". People are confusing minimum wage with a living wage. I don't think they were ever meant to be interchangeable.

I have worked many holidays ,when I was in public safety. Some times I would rather be working, than be home with the inlaws.

I can't figure out why anyone with the internet and a credit card would be willing to deal with the crowds and the traffic of holiday shopping.

That's pretty close to my personal definition of hell, have yet to see a deal great enough to be worth it.... and most of the internet retailers already have deals out anyway so I have no clue why you'd go to a physical store.

I'm with you there. Being in cowds in my wheelchair just sucks more.

So is the problem that Walmart doesn't pay a living wage, or is it that folks that need a living wage don't have any other options?

One of the funniest forms of hypocrisy is the whining of people about the "plight" of people who "have" to work on Thanksgiving.

Those folks have a job and the intelligence to show up for work, instead of lying about on public assistance, complaining about all those tax payers who make their stay at home existence possible.

I keep telling our grand kids that it is so much better to have a crappy job, than no income and if that means starting out on the bottom of the totem pole, and - gasp - having to work your way up and out of it, then that's what you do, instead of whining like crying, losers and pathetic, whiners.

Those lucky bastards... I've been trying to convince my boss to let me open up shop on thanksgiving, but no-joy so far.

We are eating at Uncle Cracker's place for Thanksgiving. Ohh his last name is Barrel

As do a lot of military families but I never hear a liberal suggesting adding money to the military budget.

Really? I'm all for paying our soldiers a living wage, far more actually.

The money could be taken out of Halliburton's check , they'd never miss it...

Oh, wait...I forgot...

The military industrial complex gets the fine food. Our soldiers get the scraps that fell on the floor.

^^^^^ This.

If they work at Wal-Mart, they already live on the dole since Satan's Five & Dime doesn't pay a living wage.
