...before my 172 decided I was saving too much money.

Portland ATC informed me that my spiffy Narco AT150 was intermittently reporting my position and altitude when I was heading south from Mt Washington Monday. Sweet. The reported altitude was swinging between a range of a two thousand feet, and the position reporting was week.

So... options? Swap it out with another Narco AT150? Start thinking about ADSb and get a King KT74? The KT74 handles both mode C and ES, correct?

Well if it's any comfort, mine was repaired for $350. It may or not be worth it for you. I can't remember the model but there's a cheap (that's relative) Garmin model that may be ads-b "ready"

Anyone have a 430W they want to donate?

Stick your head under there and look for the encoder and check for loose wires first. Then take it in and get it tested, you might be able to have it fixed inexpensively. I feel there may be more solutions to ADS-b when the time gets near.

Get a garmin 330es and be done

The Garmin 330es and the King KT74 offer the same functionality, as far as I know: Transponder + ADS-B out. The lack of ADS-B in would however keep me away from either of them. IMHO it just does not feel right to spend such a lot of money, only to meet the mandate, but to still need a portable device to take full advantage of the ADS-B system. With all the recent releases of ADS-B hardware, it might be worthwhile to wait another year or so in the hope for transponders which also provide ADS-B in and out.

If you still want to get one of the two, you might want to think about which GPS you would most likely add in the future. The new Garmin 650 / 750 can remote control the Garmin 330 but AFAIK not the King 76.

:yeahthat:

We recently had a similar problem, however with the radio. Whenever I transmitted from the pilot's seat, we had what sounded like massive noise. Turned out that it was the combination of vibration and a broken cable to the ptt-switch.

I was going to get the regular 330 and the gdl 88 on new panel, but 650 with weather and traffic gets really busy, opted 330es to be done with mandate and keep the ipad and the stratus 2 for ads-b in. When my two iPads crap out I may get the gdl and replace my gnc 250 with the 650 and pop a 750. I got wired and tray ready for gdl

What he said. And clean the antenna too....

If all that fails, the 330es is the way to go.

Take the easy way out. And get the Garmin 330 es.
