One of the scariest unknown technology risks of this decade is the issue of radiation from cell phones. There’s still an open question about whether long term exposure to these mobile devices will cause damage or disease to human beings.

Actually there is not that much of a question.

Non-ionizing radiation from radio waves has been studied for a long time now. The amount of radiation from these devices is extremely low. Far lower than those from police/fire department radios or even aviation handhelds, and there has been no credible linkage between these devices and any cancer.

This is not to say that radiowaves are always safe, they are not, but there needs to be a lot higher power density than in cellphones which are running well under a half Watt these days.

This is from the American Cancer Society

Non-Ionizing Radiation

Non-ionizing radiation is low-frequency radiation that does not have enough energy to cause ionization in tissues, but may cause adverse health consequences in other ways. Common types of non-ionizing radiation include ultraviolet rays, visible light, electromagnetic fields, infrared radiation, microwaves, and radiofrequency radiation (radio waves). Electrical appliances, heaters, and cellular phones emit (send out) non-ionizing radiation waves. Of all the types of non-ionizing radiation, only ultraviolet rays have been established as a cancer-causing agent.

I'm not buying into the cellphone radiation threat. If that was the cause we'd have a spike in thigh cancer or breast cancer in men (shirt pocket).

Then again, using that logic, electrical workers should have issues from the low freq waves & induced voltages/heating they experience on live wires.

I'm staying out of this one (as he looks down at the place on his finger that got a pretty good MF RF burn on it....)

Everyone knows that all the electrical noice in the air over the last 100 years has caused every modern problem including Global Warming. It's all those radio waves rubbing together.

But FEAR NOT the government is here. removing the analog TV signals and ADF transmistters from the airwaves to protect us.

That is not why either of those has been removed as services. :raspberry:

Correct.

With TV it was ALL about $$$$$$$. $$$$$$$.

NDBs are also about $, but solely as it relates to use and maintenance. (Y'all will be wishing for them when the fragile GPS signal gets jammed...) :raspberry:

NOt something I worry about.

Now, those secret waves being sent by the NSA to intercept my brainwaves? Those worry me. I'm up to a triple-lined foil hat, but I'm not sure it's enough.

As if you need another reason to wear one of these...

A cell phone is about 1000000x more likely to kill ya when you whack your car into something, than from the emf it radiates.

That's cause you're using it wrong. It's kinda like how a GPS is likely to run you straight into a hill or a sectional can get you into a spiral if you play the fool.

No, but I did use the wrong pronouns - you think I'm talking about Greg by the use of "you". I should have said, "one", because I was referring to the statistics of relative risk here, not what might happen to an individual.

What about the Magenta Line of Death?

That's the problem with adding more tech (or is that TEK) to every part of our life... a new excuse for stupidity.
Fly the [plane], not the GPS!

I've been assimilated by the clan that wears the stupid looking clamshell on the ear - finally broke down and did what I said I would never do. Hands free bluetooth ear piece. Man, do I feel stupid with that thing hanging off my ear, but no more wires.

Now, how about bluetooth radiation levels next to the brain vs cell phone radiation? :) yeah, I'm trolling. After spending 9 years seated directly under the 1MW radar antenna on the Hawkeye, I don't think a little cell phone or bluetooth radiation is going to make the hair grow back.

But ... but ... bluetooth works on 2.4 Ghz, nearly the same as a microwave. Now you've got 1 - 100 mW of power cooking your brain.

Up to 10mW, I don't know of any class 3 headsets. I could be wrong, but I would expect that battery size helps stop any of those from being widely accepted. After all, BT HS users want their Borg implant to be small and last a long time.
