Keep getting a nagging popup window for me to search for new software, I haven't added anything or done anything new but this keeps coming up.
Ideas?
All sorts of hits on google but I have no idea what to do.

That looks like a windows problem (not a problem with our forum software). Have you installed or uninstalled anything lately? Something changed on your local system.

That is asking for a driver. Generally, IME, that pops up when you have an Intel chipset. Their drivers for whatever chipset that is will generally resolve it.

That has nothing to do with your ability to modify a post or upload an image. What happens when you try to do that?

I think I confused the issue by putting the edit above the original post.

I started a message to POA about the bus controller, decided to add a screenshot. When I went back to add it, POA would not let me. Couldn't even change the message. Kept getting a db error. It was all happening around the time of the POA outage. Nothing to do with the bus controller! All is well now.

Except for this nagging popup about the SM bus controller.
I think you are saying I need to search for a driver and install it.
(one has to wonder what has changed in 4 years that I suddenly need to but that is another question).
So, I will search for the driver and try to install. Thanks for the tip.
Maybe we should have a computer repair session at Gastons.

Right click My Computer on your desktop. Click Manage. In Device Manager, does SM Bus show up with a yellow triangle or other alert symbol?

If so, you can try right-clicking over it, and select Disable. After all, the device isn't working right now, either, and you're not telling us about other issues that's causing you. SM Bus, as per the link Spike put up, has very limited uses. It may not be controlling anything you care about, and disabling it would be easier than spending hours finding the exact set of firmware for your motherboard.

If that doesn't work, I can help you track down the right driver...

Actually, just reinstalling the chipset driver like Jesse said should solve your problem. It probably got corrupted.

Agreed; but the trick for Dave is figuring out exactly what chipset driver set to download... easier in person than walking him through it on a forum.

I did click the option to reinstall but it could not find, on its own, the required driver (and I was no damn help).
Its disabled and no warning popup so far,
:)

Dave, I was going to have you download and try a similar utility. What Rich has here will not FIX your problem, but if you give us the info from the utility, we can help you identify which driver package to download and install. Send us a screen shot of this screen:

Showoff.

You may have to click on the motherboard link on the left to get the chipset information. Sometimes it shows on the right panel, sometimes not.

I pulled that up on my DEV/QA system. :rofl::rofl:

(That's a lie, but was funny)
