Sizzling Heat Wave Fries Most of U.S.

Ah, Maine is down to a respectable 75 deg. today, not so humid, and I'm about to take the Harley down to Portland to deliver some music to my accompanist.
Lots of trees down in toonda storms, yesterday.

Good call.
If you don't have at least a liftoff by halfway (preferably completely out of ground effect for DA) the probability of not clearing obstacles is usually rising very fast.

98 yesterday, 99 today. Starting to warm up nicely, spring must be just around the corner :goofy: .

I actually aborted a takeoff Sunday because the plane couldn't get off the ground as quickly as I'd like. First time I've ever done that except once in training. Actually, she'd have broke ground before I ran out of runway, but the powerlines and trees at the other end kinda bugged me. Almost 3000 ft of runway, but 95 degrees and a bit of an uphill run was just more than the old girl could handle, I guess. We got to the halfway point and still hadn't broke ground, so I gave it up. Surprised the heck out of my wife, who quite kindly kept quiet until I'd slowed the plane. Aborted, taxiied back, put 10 degrees of flaps in and 18E managed to get the job done. Shouldn't have tried the first takeoff without the flaps, in retrospect. They can make a difference in a Skyhawk.

I hate the cold. I'd much rather sweat than try to get feeling back in my toes.

I'm just about the opposite. I've never lived anywhere but Florida and the summertime heat still makes me sag.

If you're trying to get feeling back in your toes, you're not dressed properly for the conditions you're in. You can always add layers to keep warm. When it's hot and you're down to being starkers and still burning to death, you're in trouble.

I was out changing the power steering return line in the jeep today. 97F, no air movement at all, not a cloud in the sky. Sweat in the eyes constantly and I was soaked by the time I was done. It was indistinguishable from being inside an oven with the knob set to 'melt rock' and that was with a cold engine. Ugh. I thought I was going to die. Note to self: Do not ever lay the flare nut wrench on the concrete in the sun again during the summer.

Don't worry right coasters. This heat wave will break when THIS gets there.

This is what we can expect next week in Oshklosh after we get the 100 degree humid days.

Mike.. that radar return makes no sense. I've never seen (sans hurricane) a 200+ mile wide band of TSRA like that. Is that the composite view, not just straight base reflectivity?

Cheers,

-Andrew

I'm not dressed when I'm getting in the shower. Sure, turning up the thermistat is an option. So is burning wads of cash to keep warm. Same concept.
As far as the heat - there's a giant heat sink a few miles from our house.

I like cold temperatures a lot better.

My theory is that you can always put more clothes on, but there is a limit to how many of your clothes you can/should take off.

98 degrees here right now 1940 PDT

whew it hot.

I'm sorry. But I'd rather take the heat.

It can get insanely cold up here. So cold that flying is nothing but an actual painful experience. When I said painful, I mean..It actually HURTS.

It will get so cold that you will do NOTHING but hide inside and RUN like hell to your car...You will get to your car to find it covered in a layer of ice. You can't even get your key into the door to unlock it. Even if you have keyless entry you are STILL screwed because you can't even get the door open. It's frozen shut. You sit there in pain pulling and trying to find a way to grip the door...Eventually you MIGHT get it open. You put the key in the car and try to start it...It might start, but it will sound like it's going to die an awful death.

It's rare that it gets that cold..But it does.

Give me the heat. I can deal with it...Althought I will probably complain the whole time.

IFP hasnt had that taxiiway in over a year. There is a chillies resturaunt there now. Now you get to taxi to the east and wait at the gate in 120 heat untill some decides you can leave the airport and they open the gate for you. I refuse to goto IFP any more, at least untill they get another FBO there.

Really? Shows ya how long its been since I've been there. Boss keeps his planes at the airport south of there. Can't recall the name, and I THOUGHT that it has a dirt runway....

104F when I got on the motorcycle to ride into work yesterday afternoon (~1400ish), it was 76F when I left work at 0330 this morning. Today was forcasted to be 108F. It was a bit warm when I drove in (running late, had to take the car). I left work at 2330 and the time/temp on the bank shows 11:29 pm and 88F.

The beach is so much more interesting in the latter case.

Some beaches, especially the south of France. Definitely not beaches where overfed whales come to sun. (he says, while living in one of the "fattest and least fit" cities in the US).

Chicago, where thousands of people DIED in the last major heat wave, just suffered a power failure over a wide area on the south side. ComEd rerouted power but the had the backup cable melt. Gonna be BAD. The last I heard they wouldn't have power back until this afternoon and they're prone to blow deadlines like that.

100 degrees plus. Not heat factor. Real temperature.

I called Mom to tell her I was coming over to install the air conditioner. She SCREAMED at me that she didn't want it. Thus we have in Illinois that people would rather die than look at the power bill.

I intend to install the A/C anyway.

Getting to be a tad balmy in the Philly area today. Warms up a bit more and I'll be convinced that spring is just around the corner :goofy:

We've hit the century mark here already today. We've been pushing the upper 90's for the last 10+days, with no end in sight. Currently on Phase 1 water restrictions - we're something like 15 inches below normal on rainfall.

Why shouldn't the pain be shared? :dunno: ;)
