According to Wikipedia, they built ONE with retractable gear. I think they should have built more as it looks really cool.

Correct! they were going to build more, and also planned a 4 seater but then ERCO sold to Forney
Heres a real photo

It would be neat but it would take away from the goal, to create a simple aircraft that was similar to driving a car, thus steering it with the yoke on the ground, only 2 axis controls...

That's super cool. I much prefer original schemes to the modern swoopy ones, and that's a good one. Hard to believe 60 year old paint still looks that nice. That thing has clearly been loved.
