I am wondering if vehicles that drive on highways and on roads should be equipped with short-range CTAF-style radios. Would it increase safety especially on crowded highways when you are trying to pass a vehicle but other vehicles are whizzing on past you? Is see-and-avoid enough or do you think a radio which you can communicate to other drivers in your immediate vicinity make our roadways safer?

Just a thought.

Truckers already there. CB radios baby!

CB's, channel 19, pretty entertaining to listen to when on the road. If everybody used them in daily traffic, imagine the road rage/arguments that would occur.

I heard a comedian saying he wished cars had built in cell phones with their license plate as the phone number. Then you could take road rage to a whole new level.

Hope the day never comes when passengers can use their cells enroute on an airliner.

Yeah, I had a CB that I used in a couple of vehicles I owned. It was fun to listen to the chatter and participate to some degree. Very easy to see why they were so popular pre cell phones and are still popular today.

Breaker-breaker-1-9 this here's Twin Engine Kyle you got a copy on me @SixPapaCharlie come on!

US airlines? I didn't think the FAA approved it, yet.

If a standard was set for orderly communication, and it was sometimes difficult or impossible to see cars you were passing until you were right upon them, and most cars were already equipped with radios, then I think it would be a good idea.

I-35 traffic, blue toyota camry, mile marker 150, southbound, middle lane, 72 mph, will be passing silver Kia on the left.

Any traffic in the area, please advise.

I actually remember when many four-wheeler drivers had and used CB radios. It was a mess and made the service useless. Fortunately, that fad abated after a few years.

This would eliminate the need for flipping the bird.

We could just mandate ADS-B on all cars and that would eliminate the need for running radar traps, they could just mail you a ticket whenever you speed!! It would all be automated, so you wouldn't need to go to court to fight the ticket, because your transponder would testify against you!! :D

I wouldn't want a radio in my car because I would be shouting profanities at all the retarded monkeys who can't drive and do stupid suicidal sh*t on our roads.
OTOH, smokey reports would be useful. But I bet dumba**es would screw with drivers just for fun and issue fake reports which would grind traffic to a halt (because around here, all the dumbsh*ts on the roads slow down to 20 below speed limit if they see a cop somewhere or hear a siren).
And another fun tidbit: while I loved the fad of CB radios on the road, channel 19 would be totally useless to me since I do not speak Spanish (I live in "the middle of the f***ing desert", aka Texas).
All-in-all, this is a no-go on benefit-over-aggravation. :)

"Hey douchenozzle in the semi, why don't you come over to my silver Prius and say that to my FACE? It's the one with the Namaste sticker, you ****ing ****!"

While you're sitting about 3 cars back from that Prius. =D

Oh yea, car to car radios would be awesome, the kind of fights you could see as you drive down the road would be entertaining.

"Hey Red Toyota on I-95 south license plate "EETMYSHT", mile 125, you just cut me off asshat. You do it again, and I'll fxxxing kill you."

Yes, because without car-to-car, yelling obscenities at them, knowing that they can't hear you, is very unproductive.

We have this and have had this for quite some time now. It is called turning your friggin head to look at your mirrors and check your blind spots. Kind of hard to do while staring at your phone but small price to pay for not killing or being killed.

I would be happy of drivers just kept their blinker fluid topped off once in a while.
