Should I alert the FAA about my so called friend?

im no rat, but he lied on his medical to obtain a 3rd class and now just does basic med since he perjured himself.

What should I do?

Does he owe you money, or did he break up with you or a family member? How do you know he lied?

The probable outcome of the thread is "Block his phone number, delete his number from your phone, then live and let live"

Is he an Isis recruit that has vowed to crash his plane into a group of schoolchildren and nuns? If yes, then I would report him.

If he neglected to mention taking Prozac for a brief period 10 years ago, then I would mind my own business.

If OP does decide to report. Can the faa revoke BasicMed? If the class 3 has expired they can't revoke that I imagine? And if his last medical wasn't revoked could they still fly LSAs?

I suppose they could go after the license itself.
 
If he lied about a medical condition that would have prohibited him from getting a certificate you should.

61.59 Falsification, reproduction, or alteration of applications, certificates, logbooks, reports, or records.
(a) No person may make or cause to be made:

(1) Any fraudulent or intentionally false statement on any application for a certificate, rating, authorization, or duplicate thereof, issued under this part;

(2) Any fraudulent or intentionally false entry in any logbook, record, or report that is required to be kept, made, or used to show compliance with any requirement for the issuance or exercise of the privileges of any certificate, rating, or authorization under this part;

(3) Any reproduction for fraudulent purpose of any certificate, rating, or authorization, under this part; or

(4) Any alteration of any certificate, rating, or authorization under this part.

(b) The commission of an act prohibited under paragraph (a) of this section is a basis for suspending or revoking any airman certificate, rating, or authorization held by that person.
 
I always wonder what the underlying motive is in these types of threads.. do you call the police when you see someone jaywalk? What about when you see someone run a red light? What about when you think someone might be drunk driving? What about when you see an accident? There's a range of severity there

Ultimately anonymous people on the internet can't tell you what to do you.. you have to decide that for yourself. I'm just curious what the motive is.. "my friend has epileptic seizures and I'm scared he'll die if he is a pilot" or "I'm annoyed that he got away with something while I play by the rules"

If you believe people are in imminent danger as a result of this medical issuance, then yes.

I think this is the best idea! I'm wondering how you would know someone lied on their medical. The guy may have lied to his friend. We have a guy on our field who everyone was worried about. He would take off and fly into hard IFR conditions where he would disappear shortly after takeoff. Someone said they didn't know he had his IFR ticket and he responded that he didn't, but the display on his Garmin was amazing. Not sure why, but he was lying! He's a current IFR pilot. Maybe he figured it wasn't the other guy's business.

Not only that, but in this case, he is saying the guy lied on his 3rd Class Medical, so now just does Basic Med since he perjured himself. How does this makes sense... he lied, why wouldn't he keep lying? If he wasn't caught and his doctor now signed off on Basic Med requirements, the doctor thinks he's safe to fly.

Maybe he meant the guy is now flying Light Sport, which requires nothing from a doctor, but he said the guy is doing Basic Med. This means a doctor signed off saying he is safe.
 
It depends. We had a case on the AOPA board where someone knew of another pilot who had a serious personality disorder and was being prescribed benzodiazepines (Xanax and the like) was abusing them and other drugs, and progressively becoming more and more unhinged. The pilot had never reported the psychiatric history to the FAA. This pilot was operating a sightseeing business and took little kids up for local rides and IIRC Christmas was approaching with many kiddie rides upcoming. The OP had first hand knowledge of the drug abuse having seen the drugs himself and having the pilot admitted taking them to him, and having observed extreme behavior displays associated with taking the drugs (withdrawal symptoms, then a "fix").

This OP definitely wasn't a "rat" and struggled with betraying his close friend but in the end he did. It was the right thing. On the other hand I have heard pilots talk about a remote history of migraine and not reporting it. I'm not going to drop dimes on those guys. I myself have a remote history of migraine, DID report it, and got issued with barely a yawn, so I doubt those cases are a real danger to the flying public and none of those pilots were commercially flying. It's common for migraine to stop when you reach middle age and me reporting the lie to the FAA would have just caused a lot of people to waste a lot of time unproductively with virtually no reduction of risk to the public.

In any case I had no evidence or direct observation whatsoever about any of it. I'm not calling the FAA and reporting that I overheard Bob and Joe talk about having migraines 20 years ago. It wasn't my business and I wasn't going to make it my business. It would have been different if I had personally observed them having frequent debilitating migraine attacks that were still ongoing. If I had first hand knowledge of such a situation I would probably report it but not before first trying to get the pilot to stand down voluntarily.

But in the case of the drug abusing personality-disordered pilot flying other people's little kids? I wouldn't hesitate a second.

I think OP needs to give us more info.

It's kind of like starting a sentence with, "To be perfectly honest with you..."

To the OP - what is your motive for reporting? Is it important? Does it really make a difference to flight safety? Is this just a way of getting back at, to use your words, a "so called friend" for some slight against you?

Funny thing. I used to basically never jaywalk until I worked on a volunteer project with a police officer. Now I can't shake that bad habit. Thankfully I don't often find myself where I would want to.

If the friends risk of death was the only issue, but medical deficiencies can affect passengers, other pilots and people on the ground. The system is based on a high degree of honesty.

Or ask your “friend” what he thinks?

If you do rat him out make sure you put your name all over it and let him know you’re doing it too, if it’s not important enough to own it, it’s not important enough to rat

You should approach him and have a discussion and tell him directly how you feel. Work it out with HIM. If he truly is a danger to the public then tell him what your options are to correct the situation. Be up front and don't go behind his back as this shows a complete lack of character on your part. Man up or shut up.
 
So he lied on his medical, about what? A hangnail? A pimple on his butt? or a conviction as a serial killer? Is it something that would be truly disqualifying?

Without details the question is impossible to answer. I agree with @James331 if you aren't willing to own it then MYOB.

I'm not sure the conviction would disqualify you, unless you also have a DUI.

No, however I’d have no problem with it.

Still there is a large difference between voting for someone, and taking a course of action against an individual which could yield large repercussions for them.

It will have zero repercussions, other than some inconvenience, if they have done nothing wrong. When you lie on an official form, you put yourself in that situation, not the anon. reporter.
