Seaplane training?

I guess my point was that were I going to do it, I would do it without regard to a BFR, since the latter is pretty much a non-event for me.

A BFR takes a hundred bucks and an afternoon. Why would I replace it with something that costs ten times as much and takes way more time? The idea of an aviation vacation has merit, though.

Exactly, it's not about replacing BFR with a rating for the rating sake, it's about having a great vacation that gives you a BFR too.

I'm doing it so I can learn new skills. That's why I want the taildragger endorsement. I hear you get good stick & rudder flying them. It'd be cool to get the endorsement at the end of the 2nd day but if I don't the experience may be enough. :)

As far as the seaplane I think it'd be cool. Just like the 1/2 hour in a helicopter with the control stick in my hand. I'm about seeing what else there is in aviation other then just the Warrior/Skyhawk.

Where? Maumee River? Without fuel, it's gonna get ~0 traffic.

A hundred bucks? My plane is more than that per hour, plus I'd have to pay a CFI on top of that. Plus I thought there was ground time and air time? Then again, I have special plans for my BFR which will cost closer to $1,000 so I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyone ever tried their hands/feet at Seaplane? Yeah I just got my PPL but I'm interested to see what it's like. Hoping others have some experience.

There is a place near here but just for the 172 on floats, plus CFI, it is $300 or more per hour. Super expensive. That is in Sausalito, though.

It gets better Kim, I haven't paid for a FR or IPC in several years. One day you'll have friends...;)

I don't want to post what I have in mind for a BFR next year since it is dependent on a POA member and we haven't worked out the details.

I know PLENTY of people on POA and / or in person who would perform a flight check for a six pack or lunch or something but this is something completely different and fun.

Brown's Seaplane in Florida has J-3s on floats for seaplane training.

Been to Jack Browns and flown one of their J-3's for a few take off and landings on a local lake, it was great fun, although as I am in the middle of my PPL training, the instructor told me NOT to come back and fly floats again until after I finish up my PPL training.

He suggested the differences between float and tri-wheel would mess around with my current training.

Time and cost for the float endorsement at Browns I believe is 6hrs and $1,200.

Wow I think mine is $3,000 and not sure if it matters how many hours you take. That is a not to exceed number I think.

I did my SES (private) at the aforementioned Ryan Aviation, in their A-1B. I did it during my instrument training both to get the seaplane rating and complex endorsement, which at the time I didn't possess. The cost of me going to Jack Browns @ 1200 for the rating plus getting a complex endorsement in a PA28R/C172RG versus just doing the SES in a complex airplane made doing the Ryan route the best bet.

It was a ton of fun and one of these days I'll go back and get my ATP-SEL/SES done at the same time. Only thing stopping me is the total time.
