Isnt that where Grant and Leslie are at? Speaking of that 7111W was in here the other day!

Anyway im doing two trips to Schaumburg on Friday, one leaving 06C at 7 AM and then another back in the afternoon. Whats easiest way to get in and out? Im assuming IFR? I see on airnav that 29 is preferred and im supposed to climb to 1400 before turning. Anything else I should know?

Unfortunately leah will probably be waiting for me at home or id suggest a supper get together at pilot petes.

We're at Clow, 1C5. Only a few miles to the south. I've only flown into 06C a couple of times.

It has no instrument approaches. If conditions are okay, you can shoot the approach to O'Hare , break off and go VFR to Schaumburg (which is JUST outside the ORD B-to-the-surface). It's interesting landing at 06C, with the big boys on final approach only 1000' overhead.

On Friday, Leslie and I will be having dinner at Wings, so it wouldn't have worked anyway!

There are some towers just to the east that you'll want to watch for.

Edit: They're at the edge of the ORD inner ring (which has a bit of a notch just for Schaumburg). Have a look at the TAC. Note that you're only about 7NM from both ORD (to the east) and DPA (to the southwest). And that's to the airports, not the edge of their airspace!

Grant and Leslie are at 1C5 (Clow)

If you come in to 06C IFR expect to shoot an approach at DuPage (KDPA) as Schaumburg has no approaches, you will then cacel IFR and proceed VFR to 06C. If condition warrant the easiest way is to come in IFR and then just cancel when close, duck down to about 1600 to 1800' MSL (Clas B shelf at 1900') and again proceed VFR. Be aware of a lot of GA traffic squished into the airspace under the shelf.

Just to the east of the airport the class b is to the ground. It is easy to see as that is where the really big north south highway is at. There are also some really tall antenna towers to the east.

When leaving see if you can leave VFR and then pick up your clearance once you get into RFD's airspace else you will probably end up having to fly to EON

thanks, i realized on my drive home that grant and leslie are at clow, duh.

06C is no big deal VFR, done it many, many times. Coming in from the west just stay under the B shelf ( 1900) and stay east of the north-south 6 lane highway ( way outside the pattern) enjoy.

What Scott says is exactly correct. In low-ish weather, the ILS to DPA wit hthe approach controller knowing you are breaking off for Special VFR at <1000 agl is the order of the day. Just don't do the pattern south of 06C- You'll be an ORD Bravo bust.

Ditto to all of the above - only thing I'd add is the neighbors despise the airport and will call in and complain if you don't follow the "local rules" that are available with a short call ahead.

Watch that altitude!! The shelf looms close above. And as mentioned, the surface area is just at the eastern edge of the pattern....

Great little airport!

i think that if its IFR ill just land at dupage and tell the guys to drive. weather is looking good though.

I always like to look and see if the 757 pilot on final to 10 @ ORD is a man or woman B)

1800 MSL. The Bravo is 1900. Lotsa room.

Don't cross Rt. 53 about 2 miles to the east. It's an 8 lane expressway. You'll see it.

The a* who complains is east of the airport. Follow the train tracks on the south and overfly Irving Park road on the north and you've done the noise abatement.

If you head VFR, I've had some great luck on 133.5 up there for advisories....

My office is about about 10 minutes away from 06C. If you are ever in there again and have time, PM me, lunch or supper at Pilot Pete's would be great.

My office is about 20 minutes north. We really ought to do a flyin there. Pilot Pete's is a GREAT airport restaurant!

yea yea, next time im out there will definitely be an eating opportunity. but with Leah waiting for me back in Ames im not going to have time to stay.

Thanks Scott....

Wait until around June 1stish:) My signature will change around then, and I'll finally be able to meet you guys!

trip was pretty uneventful. arriving at 6:45 AM was completely boring. cleared for the visual into dupage and then cancelled and went to schaumburg vfr. I flew home VFR, weather was great and i figured itd be a real pain getting out from under the bravo IFR. the trip back at 4 PM was a little more interesting. Dupage was jam packed with tons of traffic landing on 20 and a lot of people having trouble following instructions. the first thing i heard when tuning tower frequency was some guy getting told to call the tower about a pilot deviation and that he had not followed any instructions, not ONE. well i figured oh great this lady is in a wonderful mood and now i've shown up. they gave me the ILS to 10 which i wasnt expecting so i had to scramble for that and then they told me to report the Fox River which took me a couple times to figure out what the hell they were talking about. we got it all straightened out though and i stayed clear of the pattern and landed at 06C just fine.

damn canadian geese hadnt moved off the runway all day long. although some had migrated across to the other side.

thanks for the help everybody, went real smooth. i was pretty tired going home last night though, flew 7.9 yesterday!

That lady is famous for being testy although they also have famous stories of pilots being unbelievably dense.

I heard her chew out a guy who she said entered the Delta without contacting tower first. At the end he made it apparent he was a student and said he'd go to back to Midway. I could not believe somebody thought Midway was easier to grok. I've still never been there.

She yelled at me when I requested a transition at 3300. "THAT"S OUTSIDE OF MY AIRSPACE" OK, I thought maybe you'd like to know who I was so you could talk me if needed.

Anyway Tony, the noive of you not knowing that's the Fox river. :D

yea i guess you have to be a local to shoot the approach. the problem was that i wasnt sure if they were saying "fox river" or the name of some fix on the approach that i wasnt sure if i was already past. my biggest worry was that i had already passed what i was supposed to report and was about to really screw some stuff up.

and i heard a lot of dense pilots on frequency. one guy only answered about every 4th call.

She does have that rep. I have never felt her wrath but I did have a funny thing happen with her a couple of months ago. I needed to transition DPA airspace to get down to LOT to pick up crew for Coast Guard Aux mission. When I called tower I used my CG call sign and was cleared. As I was approaching the airport I hear "Coast Guard Helo what is your position I have unidentified fixed wing traffic right in your area", I let her know I was the 'fixed wing' traffic, made her laugh as she told me she just figured I was a fast moving helo when I called up. Ever since then when I call in and she answers she asks "still a fix wing?"

Haha... Yeah, I've got a good one from there. I'm headed in there in an Archer, and there's an Arrow a ways behind me. Tower tells the Arrow to follow me. Arrow ******* and moans. Tower tells them to keep following me. Arrow ******* and moans. Repeat until I'm in the flare, the Arrow is on short final complaining about how he's going to run me over and might have to go around, and tower says...

"Arrow N1234X, if you'd PUT YOUR GEAR DOWN maybe you wouldn't run them over..." :hairraise: :goofy:

I was at 06C today. Had to dodge lots of geese and the taxiway is covered is goose dung. GEESH! What a mess!!

Weird. You would think with the traffic they get the birds would be scared away.

As someone who's college campus (SIUE) was constantly overrun by those things, I think it's safe to say that NOTHING scares Canadian Geese away!

quite true, the morning that I was at schaumburg, the news chopper came down the runway and pulled into a hover right over top of them. they barely flinched. chopper pilot sadly reported that even they werent scaring them anymore.

We really ought to do a flyin there. Pilot Pete's is a GREAT airport restaurant!

I'd be up for a schaumburg fly in. Last time I was there I had the fish and chips - quite good indeed.

As for the geese - I really need to find a better way to get rid of them; Airplane wings dent too easily.

I'd be up for it too, Even though the oil would hardly warm up on my flight. Barry would probably not even get out of pattern altitude to fly over!

well, you rationalize it by doing something else too, like flying the skyline first. Always a good engine-warmer in my book. Sometime when my friend has a break from CFI school I think we'll head over there.

I fly up and down the lake front almost every week. That is a real non-starter for me.

Did I miss the fly-in? I ate here once, way back when, and would love to go again.

Perhaps sometime in December or January? (Though January might limit Tony...)

eh december is fairly limited for me too. i got a crapload of homework to catch up on so i can graduate. and 3 students to finish up. and pack and who knows what else.
