But noone can argue that they are one good looking airplane!

(I just had to brag on my baby bird) my friend sent me this picture of it in the hangar in Texas. I'm currently 1200 miles away in MT.

No objection from me.

I would have taken the opposite position. They have their talking points as traveling machines, but nobody would ever confuse them with being pretty.

They are handsome!

I used to think they were dumpy looking, and even when I bought it wasn't too keen on the looks. It's been growing on me since I bought it though. Now I really like how they look.

Thank god they make other brands! Beauty is in the eye's of the beholder.... Mooney pilots are just all blind :goofy:

I had a similar change in mindset when I started flying the M20F. Thought it was ugly when I first saw it, thought it was ugly when I started flying it, thought it was pretty darn good looking by the time I stopped flying it.

Of course, I switched to an Aztec.

Looks good but does it fly without an alternator?:D

Flies just fine - the beauty of magnetos and mechanical fuel injection. ;)

I've had three types of alternator failures.

The most common (and cheapest) is when the round wire end vibrates off the output pole. Cost: $0.50 + labor.

The second most common is when something goes out internally. Brushes, diodes, whatever. Overhaul alternator. Cost: $few hundred + labor.

Once, though, the front bearing when out in one of the Aztec alternators. The alternator case shattered and the alternator internals started to walk forward. Cost: $few hundred + core charge + labor.

I've probably had 5 failures occur, including the ends breaking.

You've heard of the "RV Grin"?
I think you might be suffering from what I call the "Mooney squint"

Trust me, your Mooney's sleeping soundly, wishing she was a Globe Swift.

As you were....

Indeed, the J and K models are the best-looking in the Mooney family. And probably the best all-around aircraft in the Mooney family as well. IMO.

If you squint looking at the wing when you are flying you can see a P51 wing. I've flown in an RV and a Swift - if you want loud, drafty, and difficult to get parts for then the swift is your plane. Try getting gear struts for them. RVs are nice airplanes, but I like doing charity flights and experimentals can't do that.

Once had an alternator belt break on our pawnee. It also explained why we were having trouble with the battery...
However that belt wont stretch around the prop so its an hour and half job instead of a 30 minute job.

I disagree...especially the J and later. They just look fast sitting still.

Other than the maintenance costs, I would love to have one. She looks nice to me!

If you ask a mooney owner about maintenance that is when they start to fidget and quickly change the subject.

I don't think my C model was particularly worse than a similar complex airplane. Nothing in aviation is particularly cheap these days.

I'm just pulling your leg. Mooneys are cool and they're not bad looking at all.

The "RV grin" reference was only for the slogan. Besides, I've seen plenty of deathtraps that could win a beauty contest. "Pretty" is way down the list in deciding what I'd like to own. The experimentals that really appeal to me are the ones that were built by an A/P.

Ironically enough, the Globe Swift is sort of how I've heard Taylor Swift described by her ex boyfriend. She's great to look at, but can be a bit of a nightmare to actually deal with for more than a little while. :loco:

FTFY?

There ain't nothin' cheap or easy about these Akuminum Mistresses.

bleh. The airplane got hit with the ugly stick. But the OP's hangar floor is indeed beautiful.

Well it's not my hangar, I just lease space there.

Don't worry, there are plenty of Model Ts, Nash Ramblers, VW Beetles and all kinds of mass people movers for the rest of you. You know, the kind of planes that fight and claw their way through the air with all it bits hanging in the air. :D

At least I don't have to fight and claw my way INTO the airplane....:D

Mooneys are sleek airplanes no doubt. Pinnacles of economy in an environment where the marketing department did all the engineering for a company, to include write those Gawd awful bad-advice-laden 1960s operating manuals.

Dave;
Lend me the keys for a few months and I will praise it's beauty, quality of flight, and utility. Hell, I'd even compare its beauty to a Victoria Secret's Angel.
Truly though, a Mooney is on the list of aircraft I would own IF I were rich(er). After all, I am a pilot and an owner and ugly or not, we pilots would just rather be flying.

I think the Arrows and the rest of the cherokees are ugly... M20J & K not so much.

Here I am minding my own business :dunno: when out of the blue someone slams my beautiful Arrow. :nono: Thats not nice.

Took her up for a 2 hour flight last night just enjoying the beautiful night sky and getting my night landings in.

To me she is a dream boat and thats all that really matters.

Nice Cardinal by the way :yesnod:

;)

Its a 500 foot painjob, looks good at 500 feet.

Rumor has it that Al was a bit dyslexic and couldn't decide which way the plane should look like it's going.

Gee David...it looks like someone put your vertical stabilizer on backwards.... :D
