Wonder if we are going to see another Richard Daley airport closure in the future:mad:

To bad the united states didn't get default possession to Meigs field if the city decided to close the airport. Of course chicago did build the island in the 1920s so I guess it was theirs to begin with. I know different story but similar battle.

Let it go, California doesn't deserve GA. Cities trashing airports is a result of inmigration sorting. Let CA and IL flush airports down the toilet and pilots can move to states that build and support airports. Many people make state habitation choices based on laws, time for pilots to do the same, in this brave new world.

Santa Monica is not all there is to California. A number of cities and counties have started operating former military airports as airports in recent years. Sacramento, Merced, and Marina come to mind off the top of my head.

That works too, no need to write off whole states I suppose. Anyway in the b'cracy heavy silly world world we live in the state is going to take what it wants. Shouldn't Kelo allow the sacking of any airport?

If a few pilots change residence in protest, do they make a sound?

With the subtitle "City will stop at nothing to close airport, AOPA ready for long fight" and quotes like "AOPA continues to work daily on strategies to defend and protect Santa Monica Municipal Airport," I was all set to congratulate the AOPA on their role in this till I realized they weren't involved in the litigation at all. The defendant was the U.S. government, the FAA specifically. At least in this case, AOPA is on the sideline and need not have spent a cent - and if they had it should not have made any difference.

They hired a lawyer to prepare a brief in opposition to the city.

Nice to see the greedy Santa Monica City getting shut down. At least for now. If the citizens think they'll turn it into a lush romantic park, they're delusional. SM will sell it off to developers first chance. Turn it into a giant mall with much worse environmental problems than allowing a few planes to land.

I wonder if the amount of taxpayer money the city has wasted on this fool's errand would be enough to interest the residents in a recall petition.

If they do close it, I'd love to see it turn into low income housing.

I doubt it. I think the majority of Santa Monica citizens fully support an airport shut down. I'm sure they see this as a righteous battle between local government and the federal government.

I believe the strategy Santa Monica will use now is to make life miserable for people based at the airport so they will leave. When the airport becomes a ghost town, they can go back to the feds and argue for them to give it up.

The federal requirement is for them to continue to operate the airport as an airport. I don't believe there is any requirement for it to be a friendly airport, or an affordable airport. I believe they will take the long view and sacrifice short term revenues from current airport activities in order to gain control of the property and destroy the airport.

I heard otherwise. I don't remember wherther it was here or on the red board, but what I heard is that the majority don't care one way or the other.

When I am sitting around in the morning trying to decide where to fly to get lunch, I remember that the people don't want planes there so I don't fly there. I am sure San Luis Obispo and San Diego like my money.

In the event they do close the airport, maybe all pilots in the area should make a point of going to max RPM and fly at 1001 ft over Santa Monica.... Preferably at 3am.

Excellent idea.

What we need is for the residents around Van Nuys to start showing up at Santa Monica city council meetings and tell them they'll sue the city if SMO closes, due to the noise impacts around Van Nuys that would surely follow.

Better yet, do it in a twin with the props out of sync.

Just bring in a Piaggio and blow out some windows. ;)

They're obligated to be as self sufficient as possible. If they act in such a way that chases off airport revenue, they may be in violation of their grant assurances.

An AOPA survey in 2012 shows that only about 2 percent of Santa Monica residents see the airport as a significant concern.
