Aaaaarg, went out this morning with my CFII to rub off the rust in preperation for a Turkey Day trip and to prepare for the CFII ride. I was flying from the right seat for 3 approaches, 2 ILS and 1 GPS. The first one was horrible, heading wandering around, s-turns on the localizer, etc. Ironically altitude control and GS tracking was rock solid. I was regaining some of the profiency by the third one though and it felt good to fly on the guages again. It is only my second attempt flying instruments from the right side, still trying to get used to it. It is is pretty different. Definately keeping high mins for a while:yes:

Ahh clearly Don your problem is that you should not rub off the rust but knock it off.

Its sobering isn't it? Thats why I get a IPC about every 6 months

I am thinking grinder:eek: It's cause of being in the right seat, yea that's it.

How are your right seat touchdowns? Mine started off something terrible. I needed landing gear on casters! Now, they actually look pretty decent.

If I had an extra few grand, I'd still install a six-pack on the right side. :)

Well after a couple of hundred hours over there, not sure I could land it left seat. ;) It took me a while before I was comfortable over there, however, having to intervene when students are trying to kill ya wil get your skills sharp quick!

kenny - funny story. when i fly in the 421 it has a full 6 pack on the right side, and i never look at it. I have to FORCE myself to use the instruments in front of me instead of looking over to the left side. too many hours of looking over i guess. the right seat landings usually iron out after a couple hours.

The nice thing on the G1000 is you can have your own set of instruments on the right side. But then, parallax isn't an issue on a flat screen.

I wonder if they can work that out for looking over the cowling? :)

I have only landed about 8 times from the right seat, but I noticed that after about 3 or so, they're pretty much like landing any plane from the left seat, except in my case, I didn't have toe brakes.

That's not a lot of fun. I have some video of me handing the controls off to the left seater to brake because I hate using the handbrake.

In fact: My very first, ever right seat landing:

yea first time i flew with chris in the RV, decided i would do a takeoff. so im taxiing out to the runway and i notice my brakes arent working which are kind of needed to turn an RV. im like 'uh help me out with the brakes' and hes like 'why are you driving across the runway???' "BRAKES!" seems that no one had ever flown from the right side so the brakes had never been tested and needed bleeded. Ive done some instruction in pipers with no brakes on my side and it works OK as long as the student remembers the brakes. worst was when i was giving a right seat checkout to someone and i kept forgetting that he didnt have brakes. oh well it worked out.

The club's Arrow does not have brakes on the right. No biggie when I'm taking my wife somewhere, but anytime I have an instructor in the right seat (BFR, instrument lesson, whatever) I make a point of reminding him that pushing on the tops of the rudders won't buy him anything. :D

It took me so long to get used to flying from the right when I was in the Seminole. Now I don't think I could land from the left to save my life (in fact, last time I flew a small plane I got in the right side out of force of habit).

As opposed to a small Beech 1900? :D
