Romancing The (kidney) Stone

I almost had it bronzed and made into a necklace to give to Karen for our anniversary. Probably best that I didn’t.

Well, you could have done earrings. But that would have required that you.......

The stone made its way out today. No real pain. It’s over.

Lucky you.

I had to be cut open to have one removed and was in the hospital for 2.5 days, then out of action for another 10 days. 7 of those days was because I had to be off pain meds 7 days before my AME would finish my 1st class medical. He originally determined the pain I was having to be a kidney stone when I went in for the medical. So he sent me to the specialist.

I do not ignore pain anymore.

Had a stone removed about 12 years ago that was a ureteral obstruction. They put in a temporary stint with the removal string hanging out of Mr. Johnson. A few days later the doc pulled the stint out in a motion similar to cranking a weed eater ...

I had a similar surgery, except no string post surgery. Oh no. The female doc who performed the surgery had me return for stint removal which required numbing me, reaching in with a special tool via the only path to the urethra from the outside world (think flexible retrieval tool found in any well equipped garage), grabbing the stint and starting aforementioned weed eater. I swear to God and all things holy, I would testify she was a charter member of the man hating club as there was no gentleness in her process whatsoever! The words "you may feel a little discomfort" have never had less meaning.

Yes sir ... depending on where the stone gets stuck the pain can be extremely intense & relentless. Appears you had quite a ride with yours.

With me, by the time the doc came in I was on all fours tossing my cookies in a plastic wash bin. The pain was overwhelming even though I was given some pain killers. He asked if I wanted to try and pass it and I said "nope" and he said he could go the next morning and get it. I was in total agreement with that proposal. Sent me to a hospital, kept me comfortable with some meds, and the next morning he went in and got it ... and (as noted before) he left the weed eater string hanging out for later removal of the stint.

Please - if there is any sanity left if the world - please tell me you didn't name it..... :)

The one Fast Eddie posted should be named "Mick" as it looked rather "Jagger(ed)" and was a rolling stone ... :D

Did they give you flomax to take? That will help a bit. Otherwise, drink as much fluid as you can tolerate and make sure to keep moving around. Sitting or laying in one position doesn’t help get it moving.

I've worked in imaging for several decades and your description is what most urologists do now. A heads up to the female pilots or if someone has a spouse or female relative suffering a stone ... pharmacy will indicate that Flomax is not allowed or off label for females and insurance won't cover... basically a bunch of BS, just have to make sure no chance of pregnancy ... also, this used to only be like $8 (not sure now) but pharmacist wouldn't tell the patient leaving them to think it was $1000 prescription:mad::( Flomax relaxes genito-urinary tissue allowing the stone to pass easier ...
