That should be the NOTAM here - open only to ice skaters!

I had my car sideways a few times here today going like 1 mph. This is where I instruct (79C). Northeast WI got a good coating of freezing rain Saturday I think it was... and it's still here. :(

We had a heck on an ice storm last year. I was ferrying an RV-10 and was advised not to land at my home airport due to none existent braking conditions. I diverted to Lincoln (KLNK) and made a good landing on what was a partially cleared runway and didn't think much about it until I got to the ramp. Tower had the runway braking as "poor" and I gave them an update of my thoughts as "fair". However, baking & steering were non-existent on the ramp with a castering nose wheel. Full brakes at idle I was doing 360's from the "P" factor (I guess). It was fun trying and figure out how to get control and what worked and what didn't. I kept my distance from anything hard, that's for sure.

I wonder if a plane could take off with ice on a conveyor belt?

Kate, do you mind if I use your pictures for my winter ops safety briefing on Saturday?
I'd love to have high resolution of the same photos. Though, I think the orange crops around Miami may be shot to hell before we see such a day on our runways in Austin.

For a second I thought that was a real notam! Wouldn't that be funny.

This is when it's great to have wide runways or a short ground roll.

What's the problem? :D:D

The first plane in the video certainly needed a wider runway, but the Navion shows how it is done.

Incidentally, I did a quick search for the Alton Bay information, and I can find nothing dated 2009. I am pretty sure it hasn't been cold enough yet, but usually there are notices for a "Fire and Ice" fly in by now, to be held in mid-Feb. Does anyone know if Alton Bay will be open, weather permitting?

Hi Skip: This is the info I have...
Doesn't look like it'll be open this year. Too bad!

Hello everyone,

The manager for Alton Bay airport (ice-port?) has the last years been
Ossipee Valley Aviation. They unfortunately went out of business this
fall.

The Bureau of Aeronautics (State of NH) are asking for volunteers to
plow and maintain the facility. They will assist those involved with
determining the coordinates of the runway (GPS)-- as well as
following up with an airport inspection.

The Bureau has signed the registration certificate for the sea/ice
runway for the year. If they are successful in finding an airport
manager--they can amend the information at that time.

If anyone would like to volunteer (and put 'Airport Manager' after
their name), please contact Tricia Lambert, or myself.

Please spread the word.

It makes the run up tough, doesn't it? :yikes: We had ice down here at well, and at KUES rwy 18/36 was closed into Monday. By the time I flew last night at 1930 all was open, but ATIS still cautioned about ice on taxiways.

Parking was interesting. I needed to get close enough to the hangar to plug in the 172, but the ramp was 100% ice. Pulled it off though with rudder, not brakes, and without having to get out and push.

Tim, Ken, & anyone else feel free to use these hi-res photos (attached).

I landed on a runway like this several years ago but the runway was 150 feet wide so it wasn't an issue. Brennand is 20 feet wide with snow piles not far from the edge so I thought it was prudent to close the runway rather than take the chance someone would try to land here. The ice was so smooth and clear, I bet the runway looked great from above!

Last night and this morning we've been getting little dustings of snow and ice pellets which have actually improved the traction around here.

I was out driving the minivan in town in a mere 1 1/2" of fresh snow last night before the plows did much.

I was "thrilled" when it didn't want to track straight ahead even though I was doing barely 25MPH and wasn't making even the tiniest changes on the throttle or movement of the steering wheel. :yikes:

Man, it's easy to wind up in the ditch.

Ugh... This winter is gettin' to be worse than last!

There's enough ice on the driveway that today I had trouble backing the snowblower up the slightest incline to the garage. We pretty much have a solid coating, just like Kate's runway!

And there's the snow. Our average snowfall for the entire season is 49.9 inches. This year, we already have 48.8. Our previous seasonal record was 76.1 inches, last year we ended up with 101.4 and it didn't stop snowing 'til halfway through April. Last year at this time, we had 35.6 inches. Again, we're already up to 48.8 this year!

And then there's the cold. This coming week, it's supposed to be highs around 0ºF most days, and Wed/Thu it's supposed to get down to -15ºF. Brrrrrrr. (We need a cold shivering smilie!)

Yikes, Kate, that's no fun! I've become more and more of the opinion that freezing rain is the nastiest stuff winter has to offer.

We had about 1/2" snow over ice on Friday to land in, but it was fine with braking action of "fair". I thought the taxiways and ramps were worse than the runway, but I'm also alright with that. Fortunately, the winds weren't bad.

Definitely prudent to close the runway, Kate!

Finally put it together, realized you are based at the airport we visited a few years ago looking at a blue and cream-colored Cessna 180. Cell phones didn't work particularly well, locals said the town is known as cellphone hell. People were nice, airplane had some issues.

Make that ~53 inches.
