The world's biggest steel producer is moving its U.S. headquarters to Chicago's Loop, Mayor Richard Daley announced today.
Mittal Steel Co. NV, based in the Netherlands, plans to move 212 management workers into the 18th and 19th floors at 1 S. Dearborn St., a new 40-story office tower due to be completed in December.
...
Louis Schorasch, CEO of Mittal's U.S. division, said today the company chose the city in part for its law and audit firms and its proximity to two airports -- something he said was especially important because the international headquarters is in the Netherlands and the company operates in 14 countries and throughout the United States.
``The kind of support services you need to effectively run a corporate headquarters are really appropriately here,'' he said at a news conference with Daley and other state and local officials.
...
``Chicago is ideally located for a global company like this,'' said Daley, who pointed to the area's well-educated work force, nationally-ranked business schools and proximity to airports that allow travel non-stop to cities throughout the country and the world.
