RIP, Robert White

Those guys were gutsy. We don't really have iconic heroes like that any more. Name one current shuttle astronaut. How about a NASA test pilot. Pfft. Got me. There's that pilot for Bert Rutan -- Mike Melville I think, and he's a civilian!

I can name a bunch of Mercury/Gemini/Apollo astronauts, plus a bunch of the X15 guys.
 
The stories that guy must have... Hopefully such people write them down somewhere.

I don't know if White ever wrote a book, but there is a bunch of X-15 info in Scott Crossfield's book, Always Another Dawn. It's been out of print for quite a while, but it's worth trying to track down.

What would be fascinating reading would be the Soviet/Russian test pilots (that survived) remembrances...
