Retesting... how long must you retain your previous test result

So once upon a time I took a few written tests and passed, but did not finish the rating associated with them. I think I am talking about 10 years ago or so.

At what point do previous test results no longer factor in future test attempts. I seem to remember that one had to retain the test results on paper back then, and resubmit if there was a retest (for failure, or expiration of time..)... I may still have the lasergrade results laying around but not sure where they are...


Or am I speaking ancient history that has been superceded by something new???.

24 months is the time you have before you retest. Likely you will need to sit for the exams again.

This will be beneficial anyhow as many new ares of importance are in the exams and are worth knowing.

If you passed the written but did not take the practical before the written expired, there is no need to keep the written test result unless you have lost the original written test endorsement, in which case the previous test result is evidence of that endorsement (or the endorsing instructor put a time limit on the endorsement and the time limit has expired). The requirement to have the previous test result is only an issue if you failed it, in which case that previous test result is necessary for the instructor providing the required additional training and retesting endorsement to identify the areas you got wrong so s/he can document retraining you on them. Further, for the practical test, all you really need is the many-digit exam ID number to put in IACRA, not the original "raised seal" paper which is necessary only if you're doing a paper 8710-1 (and the FAA doesn't like doing that at all).

Why would he or anyone care about the results from a long expired test.

Very strange...I've been told I'm required to have another CFII endorsement for the written instrument when I take it again. I originally took it in 2007 and passed but never took the practical. So does this mean I can wander into the test center and take it again after paying the price-fixing fee at any time?

Yes, I still have the paper with the raised seal.

I asked this question at the time I had to retake the instrument written. The answer was exactly as Ron said: you don't need another signoff unless you lost the old one, or the original CFII put a time limit on his endorsement for some reason. I don't think I even needed to show my logbook again, since it was the same facility as the first time, and they had a record of my endorsement from back then..

You only need one of
- the original endorsement, unless the endorser specified an expiration date
- a new endorsement
- a previous successful test result
