So I went in earlier this week to donate my gallbladder to the cause. On check in I almost fell over laughing when they handed me a restaurant buzzer to notify my family member I was done.

The nurse said it even came with a picture of a steak and beer glued to the front, which made it even funnier. So she had to make the new labels so patients wouldn't get offended.

Restaurant buzzer?....really?

Hell, even my local card room has the technology to be able to text me when my poker seat is open.

That's because the restaurants aren't using them anymore. More and more ask me for a phone number so they can text me when my table is ready. They seem surprised when I say no. They end up just calling out my name.

Kind of like... give me your email address. We promise we won't sell it to anyone!

Your local card room probably doesn't have to comply with the nightmare that is almost certainly computer / network security in the medical realm. Not saying it's not possible, but the restaurant buzzer is an isolated system that probably doesn't even show up on the radar of the security droids that control the rest of their computer stuff.

(Where I work, they had absolute fits over an old standalone webcam that had its own server. Kept wanting us to patch it. We're like "it's a web cam". Also, hated the older silly scopes with Windows XP as their firmware OS.)

heh. Yeah. I guess I'd be more disturbed if the buzzer was for the doctors.

Sounds like a classy place. They probably even have a breathalyzer in the Dr's lounge.

It actually wasn't bad. They said the buzzers were and improvement from yelling the names and no one hearing them.

It's a great system, the local hospital uses them. I was issued one during my wife's surgery, I could grab a cup of coffee or use the restroom without worrying about a missed call. The pager alerted me to report to the desk and was then notified that the surgical nurse or doctor would be seeing me shortly.

When I go to a restaurant where they call out names, I always use the name...Donnor...

Donnor, party of 6.....
Holy crap that was an obscure reference.

I prefer using "Trump"

In a restaurant where they call out names, how about: Beuller, Anyone ?

When my wife (now ex) was being operated, docs told me 2 hrs, so I went out to grab a KFC. Kinda explains why I am single now...20/20

When we took the youngest in to have some minor surgery last month, the wife took her to the surgery center while I took the oldest to a hearing test. When we were done and I headed over to the surgery center, the gal at the front desk watched me walk in the front door. She says "you must be Chris" and I said yes, she says my wife and daughter are in the back and hands me the restaurant buzzer thing as she walks me back to the wife and daughter! I now have the buzzer thing with me while already seated in the prep room!

They need to rethink their policies me thinks.

I noticed that. I don't think it's entirely a bad idea. You don't have to hang out in or near the lobby with the buzzer, you can be doing something else.
