Any recommendations for a home front door lock that can be
remotely locked/unlocked?

I have my elderly parents living with me. The front door is
down 6 steps from the living area. If my parents needs assistance
it would be nice for them to be able to unlock the front door
without having to go down the stairs to unlock the door.

An ideal setup would be a lock that could be unlocked by
pressing a button somewhere in my parent's living area.
Less desirable, but still workable would be a lock controlled
by a key fob similar to car remotes.

I'm not particularly interested in systems that can be
accessed via the internet.

I'm going to be trying to get more information about
the Kwikset Smartcode.

Thanks
Bob

You could rig up an electric strike and a release button like are used in apartments, but you'd have a lot of routing of the door jamb to get it mortised in, plus some brain damage running the wiring to/from the power supply.

Do you have an attached garage with an opener? An easy solution would be to give your parents one of the transmitters and they could use that to let people in...

I strongly recommend calling a locksmith with a huge yellow page ad. You are dealing with the safety and convenience of your parents and having an experienced locksmith will prove beneficial.

What you need are one of the electromagnetic devices used at offices to provide badge-card release of the door.

Wire it up to a door-bell type switch--normally on; when pressed, releases.

Make sure you don't have a deadbolt or something else like that also enabled, obviously...
Problem is, when the power goes out the door unlocks. You can get a backup battery to help with that though. Personally I've never liked them, they seem like an after-thought way of adding a lock.
