I just watched the opening of the NHL Winter Classic. There was a two ship F-18(?) fly-by over Wrigley Field - which they timed to be at end of The National Anthem. They did a long shot from a helicopter above and outside the stadium and flight path.

I swear that the jets turned east to avoid the 1900'-surface area of the ORD Bravo. I've flown nearly that path myself with Young Eagles. (Staying at 2000 feet under the 3rd innermost ring.) The whole flight could have been VFR if it wasn't for the stadium TFR. :dunno:

I think Mikes definition of VFR is something along the lines of "never having to talk to a controller"

Chicken. :nono:

Repeat after me:

ATC is my friend.
ATC is not a big spider.
ATC will not bite me and throw me in the basement.

No no no,

Repeat after me,

Chi-App is not my friend

Chi-App is a big spider

Chi-App will bite me and throw me to the outside ring of the bravo

They have a stadium TFR that restricts VFR flights?

Sorry. We who fly in Chicago have developed a brain block.
In Chicago VFR = no ATC because ATC = cannot hear VFR = Always remain clear of Bravo

The results sucked, but it was a great event, wasn't it?

It was way cool to watch. I have to look on Google to figure out where those big new buildings came from. I grew up on the next corner at the L station - when the first developer of my mom's old friends APARTMENT (not condo!) building across the street invented the "Wrigleyville" name - and I couldn't figure it out. Been a lot of development around there.

I haven't watched a hockey game since it was really the hot thing with my buddies IN GRADE SCHOOL. There was one kid who's first line was always "Didya see the game last night?" to my other buddy was a Canadian-American so I guess he had an excuse.

And that is a direct result of Bill Wirtz, the worst pro sports owner ever, and that's saying a lot being a Chicago Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks fan.

I know he passed away last year, and his son(s?) are running the franchise, so now there's hope. Wirtz refused to televise home Blackhawks games, which drove fan support and familiarity with the team down the toilet. It's no wonder they have the longest Stanley Cub drought in the NHL.

As a dedicated season ticket holder (I think for the 7th year now) for the Nashville Predators, I'm glad to see interest in the Hawks improving with the younger Wirtz taking the helm. It was really a shame what old man Wirtz did to the team. It culminated with a website called billwirtzsucks and they were taking bets on the date he would die. Not a good thing.

Yeah? I guess we used to listen to hoem games with Lloyd Pettit on the radio.

I also heard that the NHL had a commissioner who destroyed everything by getting them off television (for cable?)

Bill Wirtz, Jr. hired John McDonough from the Cubs. He was on the game today. Among other smart moves he and Jr. reached out to make peace with Bobby Hull.
