A former Navy Top Gun with decades of flying experience forgot to put his plane's landing gear down during an air show practice run in Tucson in March, the Federal Aviation Administration found.
Retired Capt. Dale "Snort" Snodgrass, a seasoned pro on the military air-show circuit, was piloting a Korean War-era F-86 Sabre that scraped to a stop and caught fire in the March 4 mishap at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

:hairraise: I'm fairly sure that the demo of the soon-to-be-delivered-to-the-Navy F-14 that knocked my socks at Oshkosh off many years pre-"Top Gun" ago was piloted by one Captain Dale "Snort" Snodgrass.

"We thank Captain Snodgrass for not eating Paul's plane." (They did a carrier abort demo with Paul Poberezny is his P-51 on the runway when the F-14 came in behind.)

There's them that have and them that will, so they say.

Snodgrass was the highest time -14 pilot when he retired from the Navy, having been involved in the pre-delivery flight testing.

The report I got at the time of the incident:

Crash landing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base

March 5, 2006, 08:31 AM EST

An F-86 Sabre participating in the Air Combat Command Heritage Flight Conference at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base landed on its belly after experiencing problems upon landing just before 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
DM officials say the jet's landing gear malfunctioned causing one fuel tank to ignite.

The pilot, a civilian under contract with the Air Force, was not injured in the incident.

DM says nine other aircraft were in the air at the time, but all recovered safely at Tucson International Airport.
Tucsonan Tom Colvin witnessed the crash and says it was an unbelievable sight, "My son and I were watching the jet's landing and we noticed it didn't have it's landing gear down and we thought it was going to fly by but it kept going down and down and down and then there was a puff of smoke and a big ball of flames."

Flying had been suspended for the remainder of the day at DM and official says the incident is under investigation.

FYI - Vlado Lenoch (P-51 "Moonbeam McSwine") says there wasn't all that much damage to the plane, some scrapes on the belly, and they'll need a couple parts, but not bad, considering. The demo teams and the Heritage guys are all at DM right now for the annual practice session for the Heritage flight.

I've met Dale and seen that plane. Shame. We all could do the same. Hope I don't.
