Question for experienced renters

As you may know, I haven't flown in a month. I meant to go Tuesday, but my wife was sick. Then I meant to go today, but I am sick. So, now I mean to go next week. The week after that, I will be in Texas and I have a rental setup to take my family on a short hop from. My question is about recency. They said to bring my logbook, and as long as I am recent, I will be fine. Generally, since July, I have flown about 5 hours per month (2 or 3 flights), then there was that hiatus, then I will fly next week. Does this sound like it satisfies "recency?" I know I could just ask them, but I don't want to run the risk of them telling me "no," when I feel good to go. (For reference, FFC in FDK requires 60 day recency in their aircraft, so I am pretty sure I'd be OK.)

Hoping to get better soon,
Ben

Ben, I don't know what "recency" means, unless they are referring to 61.57 (Recent flight experience: Pilot in command), which is the 3 t/o and lndgs in 90 days.

It may be that their insurance carrier requires something different than that, and if it's possible that that is the case, I suggest asking specifically so that they don't look at your log book when you get there and then say no, you don't meet the requirement...

Why don't you just call the manager of the FBO in TX where you've set up the rental and ask? Their answer is the only one that counts.

I did ask them before, when I made reserved the time. His answer was, "As long as you are current in C172s and have some recent time, you're good to go." At the time, I didn't think I'd have a month-long gap, and then only a couple of hours here before I rented down there, so I didn't press him on the issue.

I think they just want to see that I am current, which that one month doesn't really negate.

Duh. I just thought of something. Since I am going to fly next week, I think I'll make it a good, long three or four-hour deal with both VFR and IFR. Once in Texas, that will be my most recent flight (one week previous, at that point), and it will have been a really good one.

I think my head cold is affecting the very few brain cells that do function.

I doubt they are talking of recency per 61.57. WRT one month no flying; how much time you have in type? 1 hour in type logged yesterday is much different than 50 hours with last hour logged last month. So it depends....

I've found FBOs are all over the board as to what they require. As Lance mentioned, call the FBO for clarification. Heck, if you're pleasant on the phone maybe they'll even waive it.:dunno:

Ben, I am assuming that you are planning on renting from Monarch at TKI...

...I have never been asked by them for anything (this, after being "in their system").

YMMV. But I think your currency and recent experience will be just fine.

I have about 40 hours in C182s and about 250 hours in C172s, which is the type I am going to rent.

Yes I am, and yes, I agree with you. I think the cold meds were interfering with logic. I have plenty of hours in type, and will have flight time within one week of the proposed rental. A one-month gap won't matter to them. (I know from past expreicene, which I must have been blocking out under those meds!)

"recenty", as it has no formal definition, is going to mean what ever they want it to mean the day you show up. They want to have some assurance you aren't going to bend their airplane.

If you don't have enough "recency", they are likely going to want to fly a "check out" with you first. They might want that anyway no matter how much "recenty" you have.

Sorry to hear you are "illin" now too.

Thanks, Brett. I've rented from them about seven or eight times, and I only ever needed the one checkout.

Thanks for the well-wishes. If you need me to return the headset before next week, I completely understand, btw.

LOL! $5! I think you're right, so I'll buy you a $5 lunch if and whenever we meet!

Ohhh, if you are a "known entity" with them, you'll be fine.

Keep the headset until you have a chance to use it. I won't be needing it any time soon.
