I decided a while back that an old 182 would suit the missions I had in mind for an airplane. I plan to fly into some back country strips & tow a glider now & then.

I test flew a 1957 182A today & was not disappointed. It has a STOL kit on it & an updated prop. With three aboard, full tanks, in 82 degree weather it hopped into the air without effort.

I like the retro look to the panel & it has enough modern avionics for all of my needs. My wife & I have already discussed a panel upgrade with a moving map GPS up the road.

After our flight we took the owners for lunch & discussed the airplane. I told them I'd take it based on the upcoming annual. Even though we will schedule the annual with their mechanic I will be there so I can see the condition of the airframe & power plant too. I've been around General Aviation since 1972 & figure I know what to look for.

I just stuck a check in the mail for the deposit.

I'm looking forward to flying our "nose-dragger" 180.

Congratulations! You understand this crowd expects pictures :)

Just seeing the picture gives me that warm fuzzy feeling. My second airplane in the early 60's was a straight tail Lane. I still miss it.

Congrats! You're gonna love that plane!

I just sold my 1957 182A. I'm going to miss it - it was a great-flying, load-hauling airplane (I'm flying an LSA now; didn't need a 4-seater). I had dreams of eventually sinking some big dough into a makeover, inside and out, but it just didn't make sense for me to hold onto the plane any longer.

The old bird also had ramp appeal. I found it surprising that the straight tail occasionally confused observers as to what sort of Cessna it was. I even had a ground controller once ask me what type of airplane, although I'd been identifying as a "Skylane" to approach and the tower all along.

I've always liked the look of the straight tail Cessnas. Best of luck on the purchase!

Paint scheme looks great.

When I have mine painted, I'm going back to the original scheme...I think the '58 paint scheme rocked!

Maybe not the original colors but the original scheme. First photo is the original colors of my bird (and, actually, I really like it...in a retro way), second is a color scheme I really like, third is how she looks today.

I think the only difference between your '57 and my /58 is:

* exhaust pipe went from the pilot's to copilot's side.
* '58s have rudder trim.
* the paint scheme was different.
* "skylane" series began. '57 182s really weren't "skylanes" nor were 172s "skyhawks." These were upgrade packages rolled out in '58. I had a '57 172 and would always correct people who called it a skyhawk...just to be an ass. ;)

I like Cessna 182's! Very nice, Saddletramp! Reminds me of the one Bob Bement has, only his is polished.

Don't like the '50s baby blue?

At first I though the original colors were that burnt brown and yellow.

Here's the original '57 scheme -- it was the same on both the 180 and 182:

Tim, though your airplane looks sharp now, I do like the idea of original paint schemes on these airplanes. Here's another view of the '58 Skylane scheme:

The 182 was the first with the upgrade package ("Skylane") in '58. The "Skyhawk" package for the 172 didn't come along until the 1961 model year; the 175's "Skylark" option appeared in 1960.

Congrats, and good luck with the plane.

Thanks guys! I'm just hoping the annual goes well so I can proceed with the purchase because I really liked the airplane.

I too, am fond of the original paint schemes. I remember in the early sixties as a small child riding with my father in a turquoise & brown 182. He didn't have it long but I remember the paint scheme well.
