Prince William begins East Anglian Air Ambulance job

Seems nicely public-spirited.

Performing work of value, at risk of personal loss. Could that work here?

And doing it for free. Seems like a good dude and basically building his foundation for when he takes over as King when the queen dies.

What, no frothy-mouthed screaming about flying for free and degrading pay for other pilots? Is this still POA? ;)

He certainly does seem like the real deal. By all accounts, William is highly-regarded by pretty much everyone who's ever worked with him. He's never used his royal status as an excuse to avoid serving his country and his people.

Actually, he doesn't. Charles (his father) would become King. Pesky succession rules....

There has been speculation (in UK and other places) that Charles would abdicate not long after taking the crown due to his age and public opinion.

It appears as whether William as well as his brother Harry both enjoy being in environments, in which they are just 'normal dudes', like in the military.
I could well imagine, that always being the main attraction, with people snapping pictures and news reporters watching every little move, gets old pretty quickly and some normality is greatly appreciated. Just being a tail number, instead of a Prince William / Harry is probably pretty appealing to these guys...

According to the news, not for free. His salary is being donated to charity. William and Harry are exceptionally well rounded. Their Mom had a great influence on them.

I was kinda curious about that so I "Googled" it. It seems Henry Harry is 5th in line to the throne, right after his newly born niece, Princess Charlotte.

Unless I know even less than I think I do about British royal succession, I think you mean Prince Harry, the younger son of Prince Charles and younger brother of Prince William.

Less than a buck a subject....I am from the UK and as Anti Royal as it gets but Americans seem to like the idea and tourism alone based on the Royal's probably makes up for the cost...William and Harry are so much better than their father and two idiot brothers and sister...there I have said it...the fact that they both fly rotary wing helps...FYI I was the first British AH-64 Pilot...just did it in the US Army.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The Sovereign Grant is actually a give-back from the income from the Royal Family lands and holdings.

So the Royal Family earns £200 million per year, assigns it all to the British Government, and the government says "Ok, you can keep £40 million."

That doesn't count tax revenue from tourist spending. So the UKoGBaNI makes out very well on the royal family.

Oh, and that £200 million profit giveaway is a voluntary assignment to the Government. At any point, the royal family can say "We're done and keeping it all." The lands and holdings still belong to them.

Particularly the Queen seems to be a very very humble person who wants to serve her country.

Tough as nails, too: In WWII, she was a trained mechanic and truck driver. She is also an avid outdoors-woman who enjoys hiking, hunting and horseback riding. There was a bit of a scandal a few years back, when she went pheasant hunting and killed one with her bare hands, because it had only been injured by the shotgun blast:

And then, there is of course also her hubby Prince Philip, who is an endless source of politically entirely incorrect black British humor:

He asked a Scottish driving instructor in Oban: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?"

The Duke asked a British student who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea: "You managed not to get eaten then?"

Our dear old Prince Phillip did it again this week....while posing for a photograph with a Bunch of former RAF top brass following last weekends Batle of Britain commemorations he got annoyed at how long the photographer was taking to set up the shot, so Phil retorted "Come on fu*king hurry up" ! ......

Anyway God save the Queen

When you are his age, you don't have much time left. I don't blame Prince Phillip for wanting to be in a hurry.....

I have never understood the fascination that some Americans have for the royals over there.
