Hello,

Hope this post isn't breaking any rules...

I am looking at purchasing a Piper Aztec, and am in need of recommendations or referrals for someone who can do a pre-buy inspection... The aircraft is located in Michigan, and will move to Colorado if the sale goes through.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I’m having Owen Poirier, Barefoot Aviation, perform a prebuy on a 210 on Wednesday. He will come to your aircraft’s location. I will post my experience once he is finished. He is also IA so if the prebuy is good and you proceed with the sale he can finish the annual.

Thanks. Did they indicate how long the inspection would take? Also, are you going to participate in the inspection?

The inspection should take a full day on a 210 considering gears inspection/swings. I did a 5,000’ overfly yesterday but will not be there for the full inspection. I pulled cowls, powered up the electrical and checked operability of some items and put my eyes on the usual suspects by opening up a handful of inspection covers, etc. Since the annual on this aircraft is due in December, if the prebuy is progressing well and I will proceed with the purchase, the inspection will be turned in to an annual. I suspect another day or two for that…perhaps longer.

I would go with any solid recommendations you get here.

If those don’t pan out, Savvy Aviation is a national service that will find a prebuy person for you and interpret the results. They of course charge for this on top of what the A&P charges.

Good luck! Hope everything goes smoothly!

I've used Owen for an Arrow inspection, he did a good job. You pay a flat fee plus his travel expenses. He takes a lot of pictures, sends you the pictures, writes up a squawk sheet, and goes over all this with you.

FWIW: the one person you should have involved in with your pre-buy is the mechanic who will perform your first annual after purchase. Its their airworthy opinion that matters the most. Good luck.
Certainly, if at all possible, this is the way to go. My mechanic will be available by phone to receive pics and discuss findings. On my first prebuy, Airmart agreed to fly the plane down from Louisville to Louisiana for the prebuy at my broker/mechanic's facility (at my expense, of course). That was convenient, to say the least.

Weber aviation, this company’s headquarters is in Chicago but work nationwide, they assist with and can manage aircraft acquisitions from pre buy, to purchase and delivery!

The Aztec is a fairly unique aircraft. As with many complex, vintage aircraft, you need someone to inspection it for purchase, who really knows the aircraft. If that is your regular mechanic, great. If not, get an expert.
