talk to your CFI. talk to the chief pilot of the school. talk to other CFIs.

This. Your CFI or flight school should have a DPE they use on a regular basis. Talk to them and they will set you up with the right person.

Thank you for the responses. I never would have thought to ask my CFI.

Would anyone like to help me out by answering my question?

The CFI should be the one to bring this up. If not, they have forgotten one of their responsibilities toward the student.

I am no genius but....
I suspect this is sarcasm and he is looking for an answer that does not involve his CFI.

Don't know where in KY you are but I am using Don Jones in Andrews, NC in a few weeks for my IR.

Have heard many good things about him.

It's been a long time since I have been a pilot examiner, but I can't recall any occasions on which an applicant came to me directly rather than via his/her school or CFI. You have to be recommended for the checkride by an instructor...

Thank you, NC would not be horribly far definitely doable!

Ok, that could be a game changer getting signed off for the checkride will not be an issue.

I have noticed a few schools in AZ and FL that advertise getting you through your ppl in a few weeks. I have been reluctant because it seems sketchy at best and I can't imagine the examiners not going into a checkride with one of them students without some negative expectations.

Anyone have experiance with these types of training facilities? All my training is completed just need a little more prep and flight work for the checkride.

If you put the time and effort you can get your PPL in that time. It is extremely intense and you need to live, dream, breathe, and sleep aviation woth no distractions. I believe there are a few on this board that did an intense one week IFR course.

Actually the opposite is true. They need to make sure the student passes to the same standard as a student pilot that took two years to complete their training.

I would however be more skeptical of the accelerated programs or schools that have their own DPE on staff or only one DPE they work with. That is where you run into the pilot mill scenarios.

I did both accelerated PPL and the two week PIC IFR course both with independent DPE. You should judged by your ability and knowledge...not where or how fast you trained.

One suggestion is to call some DPEs and see who you get a good feel for. There's nothing wrong with reaching out to the DPE directly, although the DPe will want to make sure you've been signed off before making an appointment.

Many DPEs are active flight instructors, so you might even be able to schedule an hour of dual or ground time to help make your decision.

You can find some nearby DPEs here:

Where in KY are you? Southern KY? A 45 minute or so flight would get you to the examiner I used. Based at KFGU, also some in the Nashville area. I'm sure there are some closer to you however, ask your CFI they will know of the one they mainly use.
