I got a survey from T bar J in the mail the other day...pretty much asking if there's a market for a private grass runway near Lincoln, NE.

Googling them got to this site...
http://tbarjne.com/index.html ...same logo as on the envelope

Any one else in the area get this survey?

A buddy of mine got it and forwarded it to me.

No one will ever open a private strip in Lancaster county and build homes near it. Never. It was tried several years ago and the County Commissioners shot it down big time. One of the most opposed projects in history, according to Larry Hudkins. Remember the drag strip they tried to put in? Now there is a county noise ordinance that outlaws even farm equipment noise, let alone airplanes.

They point to Pester's Field and see that it failed. They point to the Lincoln airport and say there are hangars available. They point to Aero Airport ( now the city dump) and two other airports that have gone under in the last 50 years.

Unless you have the local politicians in your hip pocket, as they say in the Sapranos, forget about it.

I got it as well,,,I heard this is not the first attempt at this. Per above..the fight a very wealthy physician had for the motorcycle track pretty much spells it out.. but regardless It would be very cool to see a new little apt..

I received it and replied - I would love to see another airport open. If enough people try they'll give in some day :)

I'll send my reply this weekend as I do the bills...

What about this one off Holderage Street?

Note the grass runway...I've seen planes parked there.

I do understand what you are generally saying...In some ways, LincOmaha has some east coast style NIMBYs.

That is Pester field. I hangared there years ago with my UL's. The strip is for sale and will be turned into a corn field if the owner had his way. It's a constant battle between the home owners association and the land owner. Also, the land is located in the flood plain so no hangers can be built or even improved (open hangars only) on the east side.

I know someone who has a house there. It's something like 1700 feet long. I've heard its great for piper cubs but tough for large airplanes. It's a great ultralight field but if I lived next to a grass strip, I'd want something bigger...not that I'd complain too much about having one period! There also used to be a grass strip on the west side of our current airport. It was mainly used for crop dusters.

Someone sending in the form should send these guys a note and have them call Don Shoemaker, Shoemaker's Truck Stop. Don is the one that tried to open a fly-in community in Lancaster county. He bought the land, and spent several tens of thousands of dollars on impact studies, lawers, taking the country to court on smaller issues, and winning, noise testing, lobbying, ect. It was shot all down after 2-3 years of fighting and wasting money. Don is not one to give up easy, and to this day he is still angry / disappointed about the way he was treated.

I hate to be so negative guys, I really do, but my experience in trying to get things done in Lancater county is extensive, and tainted with negative and very expensive results.

Is that the "strip" just south of the Radar antenna just west of 18/36? If not, it sure looks like one

Yep that's it! I've heard when it was operational, the airplanes had to get permission to fly in and out. I wonder how that made tower feel not being able to see what was going on over there.

The Shoemakers had problems with their truckstop- mostly family.
