I noticed that the days before the election we got lots of robo-calls that would not let go of the line after I hung up. They would still be talking away when I picked up the phone a few minutes later.

The political process conveniently opted themselves out of most telephonic regulations.

Not completely. They are exempted from adhering to the No-Call lists but they are NOT exempt from FCC rules, specifically when I hang up, the robo-call must disconnect. This is a safety & emergency issue. If a member of my household is having a heart attack, I must and I mean *MUST* be able to call 911 immediately.

The unfortunate aspect in all this? Most of the "organizations" created for this recent election are dissolved shortly after, hence there's really no point in filing a complaint.

But not this one:
Autodialers that deliver a recorded message must release the called party’s telephone line within five seconds of the time that the calling system receives notification that the called party’s line has hung up
And Peggy said, "...we got lots of robo-calls that would not let go of the line after I hung up."

And each time I got one of these, I filed a complaint. But there's not much benefit, other than the psychological effect of maybe annoying someone else for a few minutes when they get the letter from the FCC.

(Hopefully this won't send it to the SZ)...

This election I only got those @#(*$&#(@*$& robodialers from republican candidates. I wonder if it turned off any voters...besides me.

Even in the SZ I couldn't properly express my disdain for the candidates the use robodialers and the robodialer providers.

There was a local radio talk show discussing robo-callers last night. It seems that for $300 they can deliver between 10,000 and 25,000 messages (depending on who you listen to). Sending the same number of post cards would be $2800 to $7000 for postage alone.

My phone announces who is calling. Any time it says 'not provided', I don't bother to get up.

How do you know they are really Republicans and not Democratats trying to **** people off and make them vote against the R's?

Although it sounds plausible, I suspect if it was found that was happening, there would be serious repercussions, including criminal charges.

It's just too easy to trace.

The 3 most obnoxious (of far too many) was from the "Faith & Freedom Foundation" (website with no contact info anywhere) and were recorded messages from:

1. sarah palin
2. john mccain
3. forgot the 3rd one but another high profile

Got rid of my landline in 2003. I haven't had a telemarketer or robo-call since.

How does this work, ie. how can one not release the line when the person called hangs up?

Hell, I don't bother to get up for the phone - ever. If my cell phone is handy, I answer it, but in general if I am home - I'm not getting up/stopping what I am doing for a phone call. That is what voice mail is for.

That said, when I got home last night I had several robocalls from the week. All GOP.

How is that even possible? You broke the connection...?

We are in the process of buying an airpark home. We have been getting phone calls from realtor, lawyer, several bank representatives, insurance, etc., and family. We don't have caller id and needed to use the phone.

BTW, we close Monday. (Maybe)

I don't have that option, I can't just let the call go to voicemail. I need to be reached as part of care for my father and my mother.

I have one e-mail account, my "junk mail" account, that I give out when I can reasonably expect to be getting mail I don't want to read. I consider my landline phone the same way. Anyone I really want to talk to has my cellphone number. The satellite TV shows caller ID and the LL is set to answer on the second ring. If it's a real person they can talk to the machine until we pick up. I did not answer a single unwanted call this entire election season.

These silly "it was the Republicans who won't release the line" conspiracy theories are a cackle.

It's not as though you can get a special, no-line-releasing phone circuit if you know the right, politically-connected phone company guy.

Kinda like "...the the President of Diebold supports the Republicans so all Diebold voting machines will throw out the Dem votes."

Some folks need a gift certificate for "Lives 'R' Us," and carfare to get there.

BTW:

In this election cycle, I got many robo-calls from both parties, as well as from PACs supporting all manner of wacky stuff. THey all irritate me, and I just hang up on 'em. If your phone circuit is not disconnecting, complain to your phone company.

And this is exactly why the robo-calls are in violation of FCC rules.
