Your posts here can be used against you.

I got a call from the Washington state IRS today, he stated that I was reported to them as running a maintenance company and was not in compliance with Washington state tax law by not having a business license.

I was turned by an Anonymous caller, I know who it was, because I only have one ****ing contest at this time, by a former customer who owes my kids money. but I stray from my intentions here,

once my name was googled the POA site pops with my name and posts, which imply I run a company. (which I haven't in a while.) but now I must get a license to keep the IRS off my back.. It's not that big of a deal but a PITA

be aware what you post here, doesn't stay here.

My problem, Tom, is that there is another pilot with my same name in the area. Usually I run into trouble because there is a collection agency chasing him.

Tom,

I like your posts and usually agree so this is not a slam. But you really expect something you write in this medium to stay private?

I consider that anything I post on the internet, no matter which forum, is posted to the entire world.

not really, but you seldom hear of anything being used as this is.

This was posted simply as a heads up.

Yeah, that's what they all say.

Insurance companies now routinely look up claimants' Facebook and message board posts. They even seek court orders requiring claimants to "friend" them so they can dig deeper. I've seen interrogatories asking claimants for screen names AND passwords for all message boards on which they participate. We now advise our clients to avoid social network sites until their claims are concluded.

Back in 2003-ish, I proudly posted on an aviation group that we were showing aviation movies, free of charge, in our aviation-themed hotel's theater. The movies were free to the public, and the event was designed to give local and visiting pilots a venue in which to meet and hang out. It was a cool, weekly event, and we were very proud of the great turn-out.

Within a month, I was contacted by the Motion Picture Licensing Association, demanding that I obtain a license for showing a FREE movie in my theater, or face legal action.

Remember, these were all aviation movies -- generally considered some of the worst movies ever made. Many of them, from the '50s and '60s, were made as dramas, but we watched them as comedies, since they were so laughably bad. Nevertheless, some sonuvabitch had ratted us out, and the MPLA wanted their pound of flesh for each and every movie shown.

As it turned out, it worked out to cost only two bucks a week, since we weren't charging admission, so I sucked it up and paid the $102 annual fee. I also learned that there were some real a-holes on these aviation groups. A lesson well-learned.

We continued to host the weekly event for the next 8 years, until we moved to Texas. When we get our new lobby done (in 2013-ish) we will pick up "Aviation Movie Night at the Inn" where we left off -- at our new place in Texas.

I also learned that there were some real a-holes on these aviation groups.
Remember that you don't need to be a member to read posts in many forums including this one. In fact POA comes up in Google searches quite a bit. I think that is intentional but some people may not be aware of it.

What I find weird about this is, this page was noted by the IRS guy but no other was. I made a bunch of posts at AOPA over the past 14 years, but he never said any thing about those.

this leads me to believe one of two things, we have some one here that knows me and the guy I'm having problems with, and is being pumped for info, or is in cahoots with him.

but it is an easy fix 15 bucks and 15 minutes Monday and the IRS goes away,

but.

The lease agreement for my new hangar at BVS states it is for the storage of my aircraft, So I will have a conversation with the BVS airport manager and assure him I have no intention of operating a business from there.

and we will send our guy to collection and attach a lean on his aircraft.

the pizzing contest goes to the next level.

Tom,

I did a search for your name, and I had to dig pretty deep to find your posts on PoA.

But... I don't post anything on here or Facebook that I'm not comfortable with the world knowing.

POA is free. Low hanging fruit. He's need a membership to read AOPA forum.

There is a reason I use a nickname rather than my full name. What you described is part of that reason. I use this and other nicknames in public forums. But ive been careful in the past twenty years not to tie the nickname and real name together.

I don't need someone causing me professional trouble for my personal views. Nor do I need identity theft. There are still cd's floating around that have the old pilot databases with your SSN on it. A name and a SSN is all it takes.

I've learned you can't make everyone like you. I've learned people will lie to cause trouble when they don't like you. And that trouble can cause real consequences with employers and licensing entities.

So. For my piece of mind I just use a pseudonym in places like this.

There is a double-edged sword at work. POA could be a private board requiring some sort of membership to view anything. However, it would then not serve as a public resource for GA, and would not generate new membership at any appreciable rate. Thus what we write here is accessible to the public.

I am another who hides behind a nomme de plume, and will continue to do so. A motivated detective could figure out who I am from my posts, but it would take some doing. Not that anyone in their right mind would care about what I post here or anywhere else.

So you got one free week?

Tom,

I did a search for your name, and I had to dig pretty deep to find your posts on PoA.
He was the number one hit when you enter 'Tom downey pilot' the number 2 result for ' tom downey mechanic' and number 1 result for 'Tom downey widbey.' These would all be common search pattern entries to try even if you knew very little about Tom.

In fact POA comes up in Google searches quite a bit.

I have a Google Alert on my name (because of my work).

Very frequently, a Google Alert will ping within minutes of my posting on POA.

I know this is going to be a complete bombshell to many, but I have to come clean.....

Sac Arrow is not a real person.

The fact of the matter is though, is I would never post anything on the internet that would be incriminating. Not even anonymously.

Some of my patients did a Google search on my name before they saw me in the office. Several have mistaken me for a religious scholar. There is also a hockey player with the same name. I am way down on the list in Google.

There we go, all in what you type in. I did Tom Downey A&P.

Putting in my name and "pilot" only returns 2 hits. My flowchart and a comment Kath made on here 6 years ago.

You have a common name, though. My name alone brings up lots of hits and many of them are really me. There's also a reporter for Bloomberg news.

Not only that I have a first name as a last name...which makes it really hard to get it with just my name and one tidbit on info.

Surprisingly, though, if I type in your name and "Twin Cessna", most of them aren't you. ;)

My name, Richard Hamilton, airline is so buried under some other Richard Hamilton s terrorist who are vastly more illustrious than this Richard Hamilton bomb that I, Richard Hamilton, Allah Akbar don't worry about such things.

Plus the NBA player.

If you do a search for my name you get a nice video of what I do in my spare time

If you do "Ron Hammer" pilot you do find post here.
Then again if they really want to see some stupid thing I have said on line they can go for it.

Is that parrot a Norwegian Blue? They have lovely plumage.

BTW I hear that Obama is going to make sure that every person in America has a parrot. That will really kill the resale market when you try to sell yours Bob.

WASHINGTON—After months of tense bipartisan negotiations, President Barack Obama announced Monday he had secured a deal to provide every man, woman, and child in the United States with a parrot. "These are beautiful animals that can live up to 80 years and are very smart," said Obama, feeding sunflower seeds to a blue and yellow macaw he referred to as General Parrotraeus. "At a time when there is so much dividing us as a nation, we must never forget that there are some things every American can cherish. You will enjoy these birds." A press release from the White House stated that while no food or cages would be provided, citizens who already own a bird may opt out with proof of parrot.

The internet search engine is a hoot...

Anyway, turns out that Larry, Moe and Curly of the xxxx County Police Department had used the internet to do a search on an outstanding warrant and glory be, ole motormouth me, popped up under that name, complete with an address...
So they came to arrest me...
In fact they did announce I was under arrest...

When I pointed out that the arrest warrant listed a DOB that would make me younger than my children, boy did they back peddle - it was hilarious...

Anyway, just for the record I have Madoff's missing $50 Billion under my mattress and I ain't going to pay any income taxes on it... So there! It's my secret...

denny-o

good to know...also facebook is the ultimate big brother...I refuse to even friend anyone I work with there...it has been the fate of many. I just got a friend request from the Chief Pilot about a week back..dream on dude!

Total BS. Sorry to hear about your troubles, Tom. Welcome to the Deutsche Democratische Republik, v2.0. :(

Being that last year there were only three males with my last name West of Iowa, and this year we're down to two... and it's been that way my whole life, I have zero doubt that if you're looking for either of us, you can find us.

Iowa on the other hand is full of people with my last name, and we believe but have never done the geneology that this was due to a highly-scandalous for the time, divorce in the late 1800's of my great-great-grandfather's uncle.

Being that we have no kids, our spindly little branch of the last name will die with me someday. My stepsister and half-sister of course, do not have my last name. Maybe one of them will be nice and keep the five-generation tradition of the middle name going in my honor, but I doubt it.
