POA Aviation Media Forum Sucks

Jack, as your complaint opened the topic for discussion...and as beautiful as your pics are...I've wondered for years why you've been allowed to post what are essentially ads for your commercial photography business. No offense intended..and only a rhetorical question.

Jim
Fair enough question. I became a POA supporter in part because I like being here and the freedom I have to share my work with everyone.

I've very rarely shot anyone from here and only once did I advertise here and have POA members pay me. It was a trip to Sedona and I listed it in the classifieds.

I really enjoy sharing my photos and getting the feedback. I honestly don't make any money... after expenses, and volunteering at Oshkosh, I lose money every year. I got a warning from TurboTax this year that if I keep losing money, the IRS will probably classify my business as a hobby and not let me write anything off!

I've admired your work in Sport Aviation and other places for years, Jack! Like I said originally, no offense intended. In my opinion, a valid question with a well-considered response. Thank you!

Jim

Do posts in the Aviation Media forum show up on the New Posts page?

as far as I can tell...cause I NEVER look at categories and occasionally see folks posting videos.

I'll add this.... I can't say I've looked at every post since I've seen participating here, but I do look at a majority...and I'm not certain I can remember a single one of these youtube posts that was purely misleading clickbait. I think maybe there was one but can't say for sure....
What I would classify as clickbait is a out and out bold face lie (ala a greasy car salesman tactic)...where the title has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of the video...and once you're in it's some hard hitting sales pitch or even worse a scam.
I think what most of the complainers here are calling clickbait are the folks trying to sensationalize their titles and thumbnails...they're just trying to jazz it up in my opinion. Maybe a failed attempt at humor...or drama... I never care for that, and have even unsubscribed from some channels for too much of it... it's a bit like those drivers of backwards leaning trucks and leaning wheels in that other thread...kinda silly....
BUT the thing is...I have NEVER really been scammed or out and out mislead by any of the aviation youtubers that I've seen post here. Not Once.....

Just one man's opinion here...but I think you complainers that started and support this idea have ruined this forum just a bit, (deleted)

I for one GREATLY enjoy looking at airplane porn from LowflyingJack. I don't open every one....if it's not an aircraft I'm interested in I don't get offended...I just don't open the thread. I'm sorry for you, but it aint hard.
also, I have greatly enjoyed many videos by all the posters here.... Martin, 310Pilot, Justplanesilly, Flying Monkey, the mooney guy out of Atlanta (sorry I forgot your name just now), Wayne, and all the rest
and I'm gathering from this thread that some posts with videos that were there only to support the discussion thread as a "visual aid" have been moved or deleted.... that seems to be about as far from clickbait as you can get!

Seems to me that probably 99.9% of these things you folks are complaining about are just airplane nerds doing airplane stuff that they enjoy and want to share with other airplane nerds....and instead of typing every word, they are being creative with their video production hobbies and letting folks "ride along" with them...or asking a question or giving an answer by using a picture instead of a thousand words....

Thanks! No offense intended, none taken!

Definitely. It's the MC's job to choose which faction will offend the least number of denizens and cause the least complaining. :D I'd argue an impossible task to get right -- with this thread as exhibit A entered into evidence.
fair point

This is a classic example of a couple people butthurt over something as trivial as having to occasionally hit the back button due to irritation of an idea that someone is somehow trying to take advantage of the butthurt person's click, so a new sub-forum is created where creators are supposed to hawk their videos and "media" but apparently a few butthurt individuals or an overreach result in every video being relegated to this particular sub-forum because...... video. Leave the sub-forum there, tell creators who post their own VIDEOS to post there, leave videos posted by others with no relation to the creator where they were originally posted. It just seems like a lot of extra work to moderate this to save a few complainers a couple of clicks.

I use the new post function here, I do pay attention to the forum posted, or at least this one and will occasionally skip a video based on it's location. .

This is a good argument, but... I don't visit a forum to search YouTube. I like the forum mode of communication, and find that the medium of typing is one I often prefer. I for one am fine, for instance, with a crash analysis video that might show in up the mishaps forum, since I feel that's the appropriate place for it. Whether or not the video is worthwhile, especially with regards to it's authorship, well, that's another story, but we aren't about censoring people for being dumb.

I think this thread started things off. https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/com...-request-for-youtube-creators-content.132711/

It's almost been 2 years, certainly seems timely for reconsideration to me if others are being inconvenienced by this convenience :D

The name-calling is sure strange though and erodes the point being made. Seems like there was a manners way to get the same points across.
I vote yes on reconsideration......

Yeah, I guess I’m guilty of that, sorry if I offended. There are a lot of things I click on, find out I’m not interested in or even triggered myself so I click the back button. Life is too short. I just think others should do the same rather than asking for something that ultimately results in unintended negative consequences.

Asking for order isn't a bad thing. We are all choosing to look at an aviation forum vs a general message board, for instance, but too much order can become cumbersome, for sure. Sometimes decisions are made and it takes a while to sort out whether it was the right decision or not.

I don't understand the posting of videos here by non active members. Posting a video on POA will not gain anything of value to the creator.
A few years back, I used to post videos here then I learned to read the room. Also, building a community somewhere else creates the community for that content.
If POAers want that content, they will be in that community. Point is there is not a significant enough impact by posting here to generate any tangible benefit to the creator.
I think I subscribe to all of the channels of POA members so I likely have already seen the videos by the time they are posted here.

I'd be curious how people use POA though. My POA link in my browser is to "POA / NewPosts" so I see everything. Jack's stuff is in 2 threads on my front page today.
I would have guessed that most use POA that way which honestly renders any of the sub forum categories moot.

Not a fan of the separate forum for media. Maybe don't let people post videos if they don't meet a post threshold or certain level of activity. Or limit the max number of thread titles saying "I almost died" to 2 per year.

I have a similar question, i.e., how are people accessing the forum that causes them not to see media threads? :dunno:

I now browse using "recent posts", but I used to just click "Pilot Training" or "Hangar Talk" or "Flight Following" off the home page. For users that browse in that fashion, anything in the media forum would go unseen.

my shortcut takes me to "new posts"
I use "recent posts" rarely, when I think of a recent thread that I was to visit again but that's not showing in "new post"
pretty much the only time I use the categories is when I'm trying to figure out where to post a new thread I'm trying to start...adds about 5 minutes to that process

You’re that guy that used to show up at fly-ins, right? :)

^^ this ^^

I typically got a few dozen clicks from PoA in the old model.
Now I get almost none with the new model.

So, instead of a penny in revenue sharing I get zero. Doesn't really move the needle much in terms of my finances. :)

What I *really* miss is that people seemed to enjoy my flying - camping - cooking videos and would ask questions and engage in a conversation about, you know, being a Pilot of America and the absolute blast we can have going on adventures.

while I can't speak for everyone, if I have any gripe, it's with the drive-by's. you are different, you are a member of the poa community. sure u want likes and views and whatnot, but besides that you participate in threads/conversations, you don't just log on when u have a new video, drop the link with zero context, then don't come back until the next video. you also don't have idiotic self-induced overly dramatic bullcr@p and try to pass it on to people who know better. leave that sht for the general masses who don't have a clue. there are a particular few who do that repeatedly here, and I won't name names but that is quite annoying.

as for which forum they go in, I couldn't give two shiznits.

WHAT?????? I missed on single fly-in to save my marriage while reading all the texts about people dodging F5 tornados, lightning, and 3 foot ceilings. and now I am the "misses fly-ins guy"?
HA! I hate that we missed it and if we hadn't done the thunderstorm dance 2 weeks earlier returning from SnF we probably would have done all the Waiting, IFR, Scud running stuff.

Oh man, I can't have this be my reputation. Next year, I am booking the whole month!

Don’t worry, you’re excused, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have a little fun with you. We missed you guys, but understand. :)

This is how callsigns are created... 'Six Papa Charlie' will now be known as 'No Fly-In Charlie'.

One time at a fly-in, a buddy of mine who is a real cowboy and owns a dairy farm... big, strong, big beard, just an all around manly man was there. He said he could handle just about anything, but he passed out like "one of those fainting goats" at the sight of blood. We decided his airport was now named "Fainting Goat". He ignored us for awhile, but now... 87TX Fainting Goat

Saving your marriage ranks higher than throwing back a cold one with the boys? Must be satire! :)
Depends on the marriage!!! Sound like his was worth saving though!

Speaking as a very legal scud runner. I had to coordinate my landing with one other plane. Both of us were thinking, who's dumb enough to be flying in this rain.

On the video topic, it seems to me that a few folks made a pretty big noise about videos. Honest feelings, and I understand why they feel that way. Having said that, think there might be a silent majority (or minority) that was less perturbed about it and would click on the ones they liked and avoid the ones they didn't. Not sure they (including me) said much when the MC started discussing this as an issue. I think, like many controversial issues, there's some things on one side that nearly everyone would agree with, like "there I was thinking I was going to die" and once you look at it, the real story is not being sure if I fueled up or not. On the other hand, the stuff @Lowflynjack posts can't imagine anyone being stressed about that and no way that should be segregated. Somewhere in the middle is a good answer.
