Or short sections. The farther north you go, the less a perfect grid of one mile sections works. At the latitude of the Idaho farms where I grew up, every so often they threw in a skinnier 600 acre section so they could keep the north-south alignment of the roads

Yep. The meridians get closer together the further north you go and vice versa. That whole round earth thing screws with flat math.
 
Yeah, but the actual surface area is greater than 640 acres if it’s got surface undulations, hills, mountains, etc.:)
