FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A small plane crashed into a house shortly after taking off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport Friday morning, slicing the home down the middle into two charred pieces.

Broward County fire officials believe the aircraft is a Cessna 421, which is a twin-engine propeller plane. It wasn't immediately clear whether anyone was inside the home, or how many people were aboard the plane. Smoke was seen rising from the crash site, and firefighters hadn't yet contained the fire.

This doesn't sound very good at all.

"CESSNA 421 JUST CRASHED INTO A HOUSE NOT FAR FROM HERE...WAS LEAVING EXECUTIVE AIRPORT ON COMMERCIAL...NEXT BIG STREET ABOVE ME...DECIMATED A HOUSE...THEY WON'T LET THE NEWS HELICOPTERS NEAR THE AREA RIGHT NOW..HAPPENED AT 11:30...CAN SMELL THE SMOKE"

The above e-mail came to me just before noon, from my former wife. A later e-mail indicated, "IT WAS A WICKED SOUND, NOT FAR FROM HERE."

Heard an eyewitness report on the radio reporting the right engine was on fire before impact.

I'll bet that at least one eyewitness reported that the engine(s) was\were "sputtering" too. As far as I can tell many people expect to hear/see what Hollywood has taught them happens in any airplane accident and they manage to hear and see what they expect.

Yes, eyewitness accounts can be inaccurate. It will be interesting to hear the ATC tapes where they're released.
