Kinda sorta, if you're doing anything back country there might not be a weather station on that "airport"

Sometimes you can luck out with wunderground.com and a local homeowner might have a little weather station which could be of some help.

Winds aloft can be totally different from winds on the ground. Even winds at pattern altitude can be different.

I didn't know he was asking about winds on the ground. I thought he was just trying to get a general idea of wind direction. Maybe I misread the original post.
