I just spent the better part of an evening getting my logbook into electronic form.

Using Pilotica because it's free and has web and iOs app access that syncs automagically.

First, if you're contemplating this the best way to do it is to set up an account, put your first logbook entry in, export that logbook to an excel document. Now, open up that excel document. You'll notice headers and your entry. Reorganize those headers so they're in the same order as your paper logbook, hide the ones you don't use, then delete the first entry, and start putting everything else in. Once you're done and reasonably sure it's correct, save the document and import it into Pilotica.

Pilotica's interface is set up to enter one flight at a time, fill in lots of boxes, then click save. You don't want to do this for your hundreds of flights, doing it in the spreadsheet is much faster and more intuitive for entering an entire logbook IMO.

I have a couple of concerns/grievances of course...
The web interface lets you select how many entries to view on each page, however if you click something else and go back to it, it resets to the default of 10. My paper logbook had 13... they did have a button for this but it reset each time I went in to edit something. I check for errors by looking at the totals at the bottom of each page and going through the entries on that page only if it doesn't match... this made the process a little annoying as it throws everything out of whack. I also had to add a couple of blank log entries in pilotica so that the extra lines CFIs used to write extra stuff in would sync up properly.... not the application's fault just a note I guess. The number of entries per page really ought to be persistent though.

Pilotica tracks night and day landings separately... which is fine except my paper logbook did not. I filled it all in as close as I could remember. I did note something odd though. When I looked at the currency page it showed that I had 0 night landings and some number for day currency. I knew I'd flown at night recently so I found the incorrect entry and fixed it... when I did I noticed that it subtracted a landing from my day currency and added one to night. I thought night landings counted towards day currency or was I wrong? Not really a big difference in my case but worth noting.

Also went to look at the airports I've been to on the map... I immediately noticed quite a few missing. The pattern was quickly evident... all the 4 letter ones starting with K.... KEAU, KRNH, KUBE, KLUM, etc were showing up but the 3 letter ones like 2I0, Y14, 21D did not. Something with how Pilotica reads the routing information? Again not a major thing but a note...

Also going back to entry... not only do you have to make entries one at a time but to delete one you have to click it, then delete. For mass entry sometimes mistakes happen and there seems to be no way to delete a bunch of entries at once. If you accidentally imported a file twice you'd be at it all day(or better probably just give up and make a new account). They really need some more powerful editing features.

Overall though, not bad. At least I can export this into a CSV that(I hope) can be imported into some other electronic logbook system if I want to change in the future.

If you were able to do that in the "better part of an evening" you are lucky! It took me several days of work to migrate to myflightbook.com - also free.

ugh, I need to do that.

I am now trying to remember, I'd been looking at them practically from the start of my training and just never got around to setting one up. A few months back I had chosen pilotica and installed the app on my ipad.... then didn't feel like starting the grueling process of copying all the paper entries again until last night.

Since there seem to be easy import/export features in each I may try them both and see which one I like more.

MyFlightBook will import, for $20 or something

They actually charge to import? Well then nuts to that.

I could build something in excel that would do 99% what I want.... I could probably even code an app good enough for my own use if it came to that.

MyFlightbook doesn't charge to import, it's free. Almost everything on MFB is free.

MyFlightbook is FREE to import, FREE to back-up/export. It's you're data, you shouldn't have to pay to move it. (Disclaimer: I'm the developer/owner of MyFlightbook).

There are only a few things that are (currently) not free on MyFlightbook; everything that is currently free iwll remain free. The only things that currently require payment are videos, nightly automated backup to dropbox (manual backup to dropbox is free), and creation of clubs (usage of clubs is free).

Sorry I was incorrect. I though importing the spreadsheet was one of the chargeable things. Guess it isn't.. I've never done it myself, I just typed everything in when I started.

Either way, It doesn't matter. I have been a user for 4 years and pay the $20 for whatever reason that I do :) It is well worth it, and the the feedback for additional fields, etc are always answered promptly..

Now that you have done yours, wanna do mine?

I would say thank you if you did.

If you encounter problems or want tweaks in the interface, my observation has been that Pilotica's developer is very receptive to suggestions.

No Problem, Sam, and thanks for your support!

I would seriously pay someone....
I started a few days ago and put one entry in and said NOPE.

Note that with MyFlightbook, you can enter starting totals and then go electronic from that point forward... (Usual disclaimer applies about the fact that I own and develop MyFlightbook).

Finally got around to copying my logs into myflightbook. Note the transfer wasn't entirely seamless- the excel file exported by Pilotica didn't match the format(header names, order) expected by myflightbook. This wasn't huge, only required some quick edits of the csv document in excel ~5minutes of effort if that. I haven't tried any other electronic logbooks yet but I expect the same is true for most of them... unless the competing sites collaborate on a standard format and why would they?

The import process was well thought out, MyFlightBook provides you with a template right off the bat for importing so you don't need to play games with creating entries and doing an export to find out what the headers are in the file. During the import process I discovered that MyFlightBook does some data validation- I had accidentally entered a night landing on the wrong line and MyFlightBook noted I had a night landing on a flight with 0 night hours and rejected the upload. I don't know what if any validation Pilotica does but it didn't catch that one.

MyFlightBook did a better job of finding airports visited too. I only saw one missing and it turned out that I was missing a logbook entry. One more logbook mistake found.

Speaking of logbook mistakes- this is currently my primary mission as I've just imported everything. I was 1 hour short somewhere. Pilotica allowed me to view flights in the same number of rows as my logbook which helped to match things up and look for errors. As far as I can tell, MyFlightBook does not do this. However, I was able to filter flights by date then compare the subtotals on each page of my paper logbook until I found where I was missing an hour.

So far MyFlightBook is looking a little better... I have not really messed with the ipad/phone apps much yet.

I find logbook entry errors all of the time :)
