Pilot Makes Blind Landing On 7th Attempt

Maybe he couldn't plug the destination in "The pilots then opted for Thiruvananthapuram" o_O

Well they shouldn't have gotten into that situation in the first place but I guess it's worth noting that at least he recognized it eventually and did something that resulted in a landing instead of a crash.

I recall at least one crash due to repeated missed approaches followed by fuel exhaustion.

Ah, the 'ol "Fly the ILS till you hit something...and hopefully its the runway" technique.

But wait a minute here. What if the wx was so poor he couldn't see the runway?

I remember on a flight in a T210 where I made multiple approaches to two different airports & couldn't land at the primary airport or the alternative. I was glad I had full tanks since I only had one passenger aboard to make it to a third airport with an ILS. It was nip & tuck landing there too.

It happens.

According to the article, "The Boeing 737 on its way from Doha to Kochi had six failed landing attempts -a first ever in aviation history..."

Obviously the reporter did a very in depth study of aviation history....

That has got yo be a coincidence ! I failed to land the first six times with my wife and finally landed the seventh, five months later we had a baby girl!

I dunno man, if my FO were to fail to land the first six times, I think I'd say 'my aircraft' and do it myself the seventh. You *sure* that's not what happened there?

:p :p

She was operating the control tower. I just followed instructions

It usually doesn't take me more than three tries to get it right. :)

During training we were told that during a CAT II miss we would most likely touchdown. The instructor looked us in the eye and said

"For the love of God don't go to idle when you hit!!!"

Seven times? That's nothing. I remember once, at Band Camp..

Can you imagine what that cockpit smelled like after 6 failed attempts?
Glade doesn't work on that much sweat and that much fear.

Well, if I had to fly to an alternate airport that I couldn't pronounce or spell, I would be in trouble, too.

"The pilots then opted for Thiruvananthapuram.

There too the plane tried to land three times."

I was sorry to see he got demoted. Considering the alternative, mucking up the landing or running out of fuel and crashing, I'd say he should be commended, not penalized.

There must be one hellava pilot shortage if Captain Sum Ting Wong keeps getting hired.

Yup when we did (low energy?) go arounds in the flare the jet always touched the mains, which was ok. Weird the first few times doing that in the sim.
