Springfield XD40 Sub-Compact (.40S&W)...Highly recommend, put 100 rounds through it, no issue..very accurate.

Very similar to a Glock (plastic frame, striker fire, trigger safety) with the addition of:
Grip Safety
Loaded Chamber Indicator
Striker Cocked indicator

A friend of mine bought that same model -- we shot a ton of rounds out of it, my glock, and my S&W M&P at the range one day.

The XD is a very nice firearm.

But I'm still waiting for Santa to deliver the Sig 229 DAK in 9mm.

:D

Man that is compact!

Looks to me like a Glock ripoff, and in some ways it probably is. Nothing wrong with improving on a classic though.

Remind me not to barge in on you in the middle of the night!!!:yikes:

I always liked "Speak softly but carry a .45" I suppose a .40 will work fine, too. ;)

Nice gun, Jesse!

You can't go wrong with the XD, Jesse. It is an excellent choice if you are carrying concealed.
As you stated, you can push rounds through it for hours with nary a misfeed (depending upon ammo of course).
Great buy!

That's pretty cool but does it fly?

I suppose there are ways it could help you pay for a plane...

I was going to ask how well it worked for CCW, it looks nice and compact for that application.

I carry the two tone version quite often, it is an inexpensive but very reliable gun. I also shoot the .45 tactical alot and have no complaints about it either! Nice purchase!

It should work nicely for CCW. CCW is why I purchased it.

Does not fly. It can make small metal objects fly for short periods of time at high rates of speed.

At $500 it isn't going to exactly break me so that I cannot buy an airplane...

Yeah, it is pretty much exactly a Glock rip off. That said, the design is very proven and popular..and like you said, nothing wrong with improving on what works well.

Personally, I like the addition of the grip safety and loaded chamber / striker indicators.

You need to stop spending money on toys and buy an airplane. Wait, that is a toy too!

Never mind.

Jesse, did you buy it new for that price? Very nice firearm. My current carry weaopn is a Kimber Pro Carry II .45 ACP. I do like that .40 though!

I will look at these next time I'm shopping. I really like my Sig but I think the grip safety and chamber status are nice.

I loved the Walther P99/Smith & Wesson SW99 (same thing, S&W just sells it under their own name in the US). It too is hammerless and has the chamber status indicator (both visual and tactile), but doesn't have the grip safety. Instead it has a decocking mechanism on the slide. It was my first pistol for CCW, now I use a Glock 23. I miss the P99, though, that was a great gun and it was nice to be able to decock it without having to empty it.

Looks nice Jesse! I'm still trying to break my girlfriend of her "GUNS ARE BAD" mentality. Maybe then I can get a semi-auto again. :D

Also carry a Glock 26. Love the size and highcap mag extension, but REALLY am not happy with just the trigger safety. In the military, I developed a real appreciation for the abuse that the Glock could take, and this was the only reason that I bought two of them as a civilian. That all said, I will be looking at your new toy and see if I need to sell my Glock 19. (The 19 is a bit bulky for a 5’6” guy.)

On the abuse front, I also bought an AK-47. Not as accurate as the AR-15, but dear lord they can take a beating!
On a separate note, I stopped by our local gun show Saturday. The theme appeared to be “Get what you can before the inauguration.” The price on AK-47 went from about $350 just a couple of years ago to over $1000 on several dealers’ tables, and ammunition was incredible. The asking price for 500 rounds of Wolf for the AK was $195, when you could find it!! :yikes:

Guess I should have sold while I was there.

Good choice Jesse, I carry the XD-9 Sub Compact and also have the .45 compact. I carried Glock's on duty for years, but switched to the XD about a year ago. Wish I would have changed years ago.

Thats 5% of what my plane cost.

It all adds up man. Or maybe I should say, it all subtracts up.

Great choice Jesse.

I have the XD45 Service, and absolutely love it.PPL-H Fund

(If you don't see progress, call me on it. I'm putting this here to help keep myself focused  )
Well, I don't think I've seen any progress on this chart in a little while. Maybe Jesse can give you some help now, or at least incentivise you to do it! :yikes::rofl:

Nice gun, Jesse!

Which Sig? I have been scoping out the 229 chambered in .357 SIG. I'm not a fan of 9mm and .45 for carry is just a PITA to comfortably conceal on my frame.

Cheers,

-Andrew

Tried .40? .357 SIG is just a necked down .40, after all. When I first heard bout it, there was a fair amount of concern about chamber erosion from all of the gases through the smaller hole.

Me? I'm a real fan of .40; it's enough smalelr than .45 to make for smaller weapons and larger capacities, while not giving up anything approaching what you do in punch at 9mm Parabellum.

I've got a P239 in 9mm. So far everyone I've shot with a 9mm is still dead.

I like the .357 because it is loud, good muzzle flash, and has the close range stopping power of the .357 Mag. If I need to use it, I see benefits from both of those things versus 9mm. Plus, I enjoy shooting the .357 SIG, it just feels nice when a round goes downrange.

Cheers,

Looks dangerous, Jesse. I'm not into firearms but I have a Colt .38 which dates to about 1941. Would a sidearm of that vintage have any significant value? Or the 30/30 rifle? Or the Mossberg shotgun? The latter two date to the 1950s.

Is there a story in there somewhere?
No, not really, or at least not ones I feel like sharing.

I'm just not sure of the perception that a 9mm is inferior as a personal defense weapon.

Certainly in the case of body armor, or other barriers to penetration - more energy is better (remember that velocity matters more than mass). But it's been my experience, from military service, from law enforcement, from personal defense, and from EMS service, that a 9mm round against an unarmored person does the job when the center of mass is struck. Rounds like Hydrashok are even more effective when compared to standard ball rounds.

Given the accuracy of a typical shooter under stress, I think having more rounds is more important to defense than more mass.

Hey. Thanks a lot for pointing it out :) You're correct, it hasn't moved in a while.

There's actually a really big change coming for me.... it's a good thing, but it means putting the PPL-H off for a little bit. I'll make a post about it soon :) [here it is]

Again, thanks for noticing.

Agreed (and I have large calibers as well)

There's been an endless gun store commando battle going on between proponents of different caliber combinations.

It's nauseating.

If you're going to carry concealed:
  • Carry something small enough to actually carry
  • You can never have enough ammo when the bullets start flying
  • You're not going after "perps" -- you're carrying to defend yourself and others when you have no other recourse
  • Carry a gun you actually enjoy shooting at the range
  • Know the laws in the jurisdiction where you are going to carry (though "Better tried by 12 then carried by 6" is a consideration)
  • Don't get your handgun purchase advice from anyone behind a counter or wearing a name tag
  • A handgun is something you use to fight your way to your long gun
  • If you only have ONE self defense weapon in the house, make it a 12 gauge shotgun with 00 buckshot (unless you have really thin walls -- then go with a lighter load)
  • The .32 caliber in your hand is worth far more than the .50 cal in the glassy gun magazine
  • As soon as some gun expert exudes the words "knockdown power" -- run.
