Orange SODA today....

Took my SODA today for vision issue in one eye.

It was with an FAA Inspector from the Farmingdale, NY (Republic Airport) FSDO. It was windy so the landings weren't great, but other than that, all went very well.

Next up, solo.

Statement of Demonstrated Ability

From the FAA website:

At the discretion of the Federal Air Surgeon, a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) may be granted, instead of an Authorization, to a person whose disqualifying condition is static or nonprogressive and who has been found capable of performing airman duties without endangering public safety. A SODA does not expire and authorizes a designated Examiner to issue a medical certificate of a specified class if the Examiner finds that the condition described on the SODA has not adversely changed.

Basically a supplemental certificate which says the administrator has found that whatever disqualifying condition presented doesn't interfere with ops.

So for me, SODA + Special Issuance 3rd class = medical clearance

Thanks all. I had a Big Gulp afterwards to celebrate. It was just a formality really because my vision issues does not affect me at all when flying but feels good to get that weight off my shoulders.

Actually the Orange has nothing to do with the SODA, but that's pretty funny, I didn't even realize it. I changed the title of this thread.:rofl::rofl:

Hate to resurrect an old thread, but Orange, did you get a new medical immediately? Do they give you a temporary medical?

My wife is actually earning her PPL right now and has a limitation on her 3rd class stating, "Not valid for PIC"... so she cannot solo until she passes her SODA flight. Same ocular issue that you and Vance have. She has her SODA flight on Wednesday and the FSDO supervisor claims that he has no idea what happens if she passes and that he will have to call Oklahoma City and find out the next steps. I find that very odd. Is there a temporary paper she gets? She really wants to solo and doesn't want to wait a month or more.

Thanks!

Congrats. We talked when you first posted. I fly from the other side of the Sound with the same soda.

When I did my SODA they gave me a new medical on the spot - it was a photo copy and it came from the FAA Examiner - and he told me the photocopied medical was legal. Some doctor I never met signed it.
