I saw an interview with him once where he was telling a story about flying with the real Pappy Boyington. Robert Conrad had earned his Private Pilot Certificate in order to prepare for the roll. He said he later bought a Bonanza (I think) and used to fly it back and forth to the set. One time he said he flew with the real Pappy Boyington, who convinced him to let him try landing the plane. I guess they ended up clipping a fence as they came in a little low and Robert Conrad had to do a little explaining about that. It was pretty funny the way he told the story.

I saw him at the Reno air races, sitting on the wing of a highly modified P-51. The skin on his face looked like a weathered football and he was smiling and yelling obscenities at little kids while signing autographs...

What a character! I'm sure Bob Conrad was too nice a guy to really convey how nasty Pappy was.

By the time I started watching Baa Baa Black Sheep in the late 90's (which is how I learned about Pappy Boyington), it was on the air as "Black Sheep Squadron". Instantly became one of my favorite TV shows!


"When Pappy Boyington flew over the airfield at Kahili earlier that week, a Japanese-accented voice radioed: “Major Boyington, what is your position?”

“Right over your damn airport,” he replied, “Come up and fight!”
