Paper on George Cayley

Hey POA'ers,

You guys wanna play english teachers/critics for a post? I'm not exactly the greatest at writing papers so I'd like to get your opinion. It has to be at least 5 pages so I can't cut out too much but I'd be happy to hear your thoughts.

My paper is on George Cayley who wrote about the four forces of flight and the conventional airplane set up around the early 1800's. I believe that if he would have found a light enough engine, he would have been the first for powered sustainable flight.

not really related to your article I'll read it after work tonight :) but..

I never liked the four forces of flight. I like the lift/weight part. I don't much care for the drag/thrust part. If that was the case gliders wouldn't fly since they have no thrust. Drag is mostly counteracted by gravity pulling down and the wing riding on the air forward. The wing rides/slices through the air. Lift/Gravity both fight drag. Maybe you could call that thrust?

Glider's have forward momentum rather than thrust. The opposite, resisting force is drag.

Power does too. That's why I don't like those four forces. The forward velocity was generated via lift/weight.

drag in gliders is actually mostly counteracted by the forward component of weight, not lift.

I thought it was a very interesting and well-written article.

The only suggestion I have is fairly minor -- eliminate contractions, such as can't, won't, I'm, etc. In formal writing, it's usually better to spell out the entire phrase, unless it's a direct quote. It's a minor thing, but sometimes professors like to nitpick!

Regardless, it's a good paper!

Thats okay David, its supposed to be an opinion paper based on facts.
 
I read it and marked it up. I'm a Philosophy major, so I write a lot of papers, and I generally have good grammar and style, but I'm not infallible. Take these for what they're worth.

I tried to use the track changes feature in Open Office. Hopefully it worked.

LOL that came out a little funnier than expected. The idea is to know what I mean not what I say, too bad instructors aren't the same when grading!
