Hi All,
I have a Palm Treo 650. It is broke and Palm wants $200 to repair. I bought it in 2007.

I have a contract with Unicel that expires in August. It is a GSM, unlocked phone that uses a smart card.

I bought a Blackberry from Tiger Direct, GSM unlocked, and found that Blackberry requires "their" special hardware. I can use the phone and desktop applications but I can't access the internet.

Do I repair the Palm Treo? Do I purchase a new Palm? If I purchase a new Palm Treo from Palm, and get a GSM unlocked, can I be guaranteed that it will work?

Unicel is not selling Palm anymore.

Also, if I stop my phone service with Unicell, do I get to keep the smart card?

I basically like the smart phones but would like to stay out of a 2 year contract.

Your thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Terry :D

I bought a Treo 700P on Ebay with chargers, software, bluetooth headset, complete for $60.00
A friend who just started using a Blackberry gave my wife his Treo 650P.
Pay $200? I wouldn't.
Also look for good advice on http://www.treonauts.com

Terry. I purchased a Palm Treo 700 on Ebay for under $100 Just as Keith did. There is a vendor Mobil Liquidations on ebay that I have been very happy with. I purhcased the treo and other equipment from them.

Jeez, there must be something with pilots and Palm Treo's, because I have one (700p), and a guy up at Heritage Aviation in Selinsgrove has one! (Also 700p)

Worth $200? No way. I got mine shipped to my front door for $34 bucks. Granted it was used and in good condition, I still wouldn't pay more than $50 for a new one.

I'm not familiar with Unicel, but it sounds like it might be time to move on.

Good luck!

Yep. In my junk drawer are Treo 600 and a 650P. Unfortunately both are Sprint, or I'd send you one.

I had an original US Robotics Pilot 1000 (later renamed to PalmPilot) which I hacked to add memory and make a 5000, then a Palm III, then a IIIxe, then a Treo 600, then a Treo 650 before going to dark side with a company Blackberry.

All kinds of new unlocked 650s for around $110 - $120 on eBay.

Used ones for a lot less.

Geez - is it pilots or Colorado pilot affliction? I also have a Palm III, a Palm VIIx and a (Sprint) Treo 650 all languishing in a drawer. Actually, the Treo still rides around in my bag for occasional use of CoPilots planning tool, but that's about it.

I used to have a treo 650 as my cell phone, but now I am one of the iPhone nerds. I still use the treo from time to time, and a gps device. I have an older copy of TomTom for it along with a BT GPS. I've also used it as a glide computer in my sailplane.

As far as repair? As most have sugggesed go to eBay, and get a new one.

Maybe. I had a Palm TX which I thought was one of the more worthless electronic gadgets I have owned, especially after I bought a Windows 64-bit computer and it wouldn't sync. I ended up selling it to Gazelle.com.

We should have stock in Palm.

Now we both have company Blackberrys and personal iPhones.
Yes, we're geeks. You could roast a turkey with all the RF in our house........

Haha. I don't consider myself a geek because I don't know much about the technical aspects of the gadgets I buy but I had 4 laptops until a couple days ago when I gave one away, a desktop and an iPhone. I need to stay out of electronics stores...

4 laptops??? I thought I was bad with a Palm Treo 650, Blackberry, 2 cell phones, laptop, Dell Axim, and a Dell Desktop.

Also electronic SUDOKU, NYT electronic crossword puzzle solver. Did I mention the laptop was a tablet pc?

Also a handheld PC for work, GPS, and of course the house is wireless with internet TV and cable.

I use 3 remotes just to watch TV. (Yes, I know they make universal remotes.)

Anyway, I bought a Treo 650, refurbished, for $130. I am happy with that. Just hope it all works.

I just gave up on my Palm(s) E2s. The last one in my stock started fritzing and last week I bit the bullet and bought a crackberry Storm 2.

The schedule book app is a little quirky and I still haven't decided if I'm going to keep it. Google Schedule has some problems, and if they persist, it's in for a new Palm Pre plus.

The Palm company has just not been competitive lately. Sigh.
