Over the Clouds

Was hoping to start in the next month or two, but just got some crappy news and so probably going to be delayed to late spring/early summer. While flying over clouds is amazing (a bit unnerving! ...but amazing), I imagine punching through one and breaking out on top has to be even more so.

Can't wait.

These pics are fantastic. Keep sharing.

The feeling of either breaking through above them or breaking out below them is second to none. Watching the cloud layer fade away to a sunrise or sunset, or breaking out below after a very hard fought approach and having the runway RIGHT in front of you. Not many people get to experience that, but its great :)

Breaking out and having the runway where it should be.....is even more amazing!! :)

Oh wait til you break out at minimums on an ILS!

Sorry about the bad news.......

Breaking out on top is only slightly less exciting than breaking out a minimums and not seeing the runway....

Still better than breaking out at minimums and seeing a cell tower...

That worked better

Love the 1st and 2nd pictures, your plane looks happy as a lark, flapping it's wings and all.

Try a Bells Breakfast Stout sometime, it's nice.

Actually, I crossed my wires. Founders does the breakfast stout. Bells has a nice Imperial Stout.

One of my all time favorite beers is Founders Porter, that stuff is happiness in a bottle. It is flat out fantastic.

I learned a valuable lesson early on when I started flying IFR. Don't leave your sunglasses in the car....kinda like getting up in the middle of the night and turning the bathroom light on...

Some of my favorites:

Playing guess the animal....

These are the days you don't forget you're sunglasses in the car:

Hey... I know where that is.. lol. BTW, I'm also looking for a safety pilot if you're building up IFR time.

eh I mostly stopped taking pictures of clouds a while ago, but here's a still shot from one of my videos. def not as awesome as some of these pics, but it was fun working our way thru this maze to get to the beach.

I don't know where I was but I am 63% confident I was not inverted.

If there's ever greater doubt, dangle the chainsaw by the handle using one finger (any finger will do) and it will tell you which way is down. Alternatively, pull the magic handle and the chute will tell you which way is up. Ether way you'll be good to go. :)

We took this picture on our return from Nashville while being enroute to Detroit. This must be Southwest of Toledo:

Is a video allowed? Maybe not, it's not all over them.

I LOVE this!!! That has to be so satisfying.

I grabbed a short video when we were over the clouds the other day -

We ended up ducking back down under through the sucker hole (an ATCer friend of mine calls them that) you see at the start of the video.

Over Kentucky enroute to Indy for a PnP flight. Punched up through a hole knowing that Indy was clear skies ahead. My first flight above a solid (although very thin) deck.

Out of curiosity, how did you know? I was tempted to go up through a hole on a recent flight as ADS-B wx showed clear skies in the vicinity of my destination, but elected not to because the layer was not only thick but also freezing.

I have ADS-B weather and all metars indicated clear. Also knew where the front was moving. Had an out to the east that I could see if I needed. And if all else failed (people won't like this) I knew that the layer was super thin and not hugging the ground. I could've gone through in an emergency.

There have been times when I have tried going up through a hole and found the cloud layer to be a lot thicker than it looked from below, to the point where it was not practical to get on top. (This was with cumulus layers, not stratus, IIRC.)

Doing my instrument training, the first time I broke out of the clouds I couldn't say "your controls" fast enough. I was grabbing for my camera!

I apologized, saying something like "I know we're doing this for training, but I'm throwing this time away, this is fantastic!". After just a minute it was my controls again, but it's so beautiful to be skimming above the clouds, I just had to appreciate it for a minute.
