Wow. That's some map.

Our mid-continent can sure brew up some crappy flying wx.

"Well.... You can't get there from here...."

"Well.... You can't get there from here...."

Actually I did . I flew from Clarksville, TX (KLBR) to Harrison, AR (KHRO) while deviating almost to Fayetteville, AR (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N836TB) Flight aware doesn't show the pretty yellow and red colors that I saw on my 496, but actually I had lots of cloud clearance on the trip. The most interesting thing was that the storms that I encountered at 30nm to my destination just popped up in my path. Weather was not predicted to be in the area for another 2 hours. Center was extremely helpful in letting me call my own deviations. I landed VFR at Harrison and just before I got the plane in the hangar, it started raining. Hopefully I'm going to fly back to LBR tomorrow :D, it's so much more fun at the ranch than at work :D:D.

I once had center tell me "Cleared to deviate however you want, let me know when you're back on course."

I've found them to be good at helping you or letting you do what you want, as you request. I prefer the latter, though.

That's exactly what they told me. I thought it was great. I just gave them updates as I changed headings.

It also helps when you are the only one dumb enough to be messing around in that crap.

I've also heard Chicago Approach put someone at an altitude that caused him to pick up ice, then tell him that there was no other altitude or heading that he could deviate to.... very unhelpful.

The controller apologized when the pilot threatened to declare, and after that worked to move other aircraft arount to allow said pilot to get out of the icing conditions.

They're all sitting back drinking coffe taking bets on how long before the single blip on the screen says "Any help on where I should go NOW?" :D

The only time I have encountered "Holy crap this is scary" ice, I 'informed' ATC that I was descending due to ice. I didn't give them an option of 'Let me see if I can fit you in somewhere'.

Got that sort of thing on the way to the FlyBQ.

"Center, 71G needs to deviate south for weather."
"71G, deviate as necessary, advise back on course."
