I once had center tell me "Cleared to deviate however you want, let me know when you're back on course."
I've found them to be good at helping you or letting you do what you want, as you request. I prefer the latter, though.

It also helps when you are the only one dumb enough to be messing around in that crap.
I've also heard Chicago Approach put someone at an altitude that caused him to pick up ice, then tell him that there was no other altitude or heading that he could deviate to.... very unhelpful.
The controller apologized when the pilot threatened to declare, and after that worked to move other aircraft arount to allow said pilot to get out of the icing conditions.
