I am wondering if one might get better deals from vendors at Osh than they may otherwise with a vendor. I currently have a pair of Light Speed 20XLCs. The ear cups are shot and I was going to order more but started thinking about Light speeds upgrade/trade in program. Currently if I trade my 20XLcs in I can get $300 toward a pair of Zulus. I am wondering if I could get a better deal at Osh? Perhaps they sweeten the deal at the bigi shows Osh and SnF. Does anyone know if such deals are sweetened at the shows? I don't think I'll make it but I know enough folks who are going that they could do the trade for me. Thanks.

There are usually show specials which give meaningful discounts. You might see a $50 savings on a set of headsets.

Regarding your ear cups, if you call Lightspeed, they will probably send you a set for free. Alternately, ask at their booth.

Adam, what do you mean by "shot?" Years ago (I believe it was in 2005 when we all met in Tampa at the AOPA Expo), the thin black plastic that covers the foam part of the ear cups started peeling off mine. I asked at the booth and the rep said send 'em in. Lightspeed replaced them for basically the price of shipping. Might want to check with them first...

Also be aware that all transactions at the show are subject to Wisconsin sales tax.

I've had them about 7-8 years and the ear cups are just collapsing and peeling off the headset. The sound proofing has deteriorated to a noticable degree. I figured I could just have light speed send me a new pair but I have some gift cards to Sportys and thought mmmmmm with the trade in value ontop of the gift cards perhaps I could get a great deal on Zulus.

I've had things discounted by the value of the sales tax there. On a $2500 GPS that is significant. You can also get things like waived signup fees, free headset cases, and straight discounts.

Well, then, permission granted to give into temptation and upgrade! :cornut:

Go for it Adam, ... then I can see how they look on you ! LOL.

How would your current headset compare to the new Sierra specs? That's an appealing headset for me and one I'm looking to upgrade to once I start seeing some reviews. I can't see getting the Zulu for a few oz in weight savings.

Don't know about LS, but Bose had a deal a couple years where if one bought 3 or 4 headsets, they'd get one free. Several folks got together and ordered; then, pro rated the discount. I've only gone a couple times, but several friends go regularly and they always talk about deals of one kind of another.

Best,

Dave

Adam,

There are lots of deals at OSH, but Lightspeed specifically does not sell anything at OSH because they don't want to compete with their dealers. I have had them hand me new parts there (my ANR quit working once and I didn't want to send the headset in because I use it so much, so they asked if I could use a screwdriver and handed me a whole new battery box assembly). New ear cups are not one of those parts - Mine are doing the same thing yours are, peeling like mad, and they consider that a wear item. You can buy new ones (which supposedly won't peel in a few years like the originals did) from LS dealers, or they'll replace them if you send in the headset.

I'm doing the same debate myself - Get new earcups for my 20-3G, or trade 'em in on a Zulu? The headsets that are returned are reconditioned, and then some are sold while the rest are donated to missionary aviation groups.

Great post! I have been considering getting a set of Zulus but was waiting to see if there were any Osh. deals that I could tag even though I am not attending this year. Seeing the new Sierra headset I'm not sure what to do.

Kent, to be sure I'm not thinking of getting Zulus just because my ear cups are degrading but I figured eh now may be the time. I actually decided to pull the trigger yesterday but when I called Lightspeed they told me they were back ordered on the Zulus for one month the demand has been so high. I knew I would need them before one month at least I hoped I would. They assured me the deal was not going away and to call back next month. So I'll get them then. The new ear cups by the way are $20.00 so I'll just live with them for a month. I have to say they are good people at Lightspeed. Very helpful.

Get the Zulus. You will wonder why you ever even debated the purchase.
