Everything Offends Me
Anyone have a suggestion for a place I can order charts from online? Sportys charges too much for shipping. Anyone use anything else?

I tried a couple of others but in the end I was not happy with any of them. I would often not get my charts until 2-3 days after the change date and ended up having to buy the ones I needed while waiting. So I just went back to Sporty's

It depends on what you need. I like the Air Chart Systems setup. You could get your half of the country (or the whole country), and it's a reasonable price, plus they send you the updates in the mail for the year. Only problem is you then have to write the updates in. Grr...

I ended up always using Sporty's for my normal paper charts, though.

I use mypilotstore.com

I've always gotten my chart subscriptions on time, and never had any issues with them.
They were one of the cheapest at the time a year or so ago, but I haven't looked around for quite some time.

Nick I've been using these guys for a few years now.
http://www.vrotate.com/

they have been pretty good to me.

Or you could go straight to NACO. Their prices are higher, but I think they have free shipping which helps.

I currently use JoePilot.com and receive them on average 3-4 days in advance of the change. I can add one chart for a one time subscription if I need, or just automatically renew my standard ones at each update. Haven't tried anyone else, but I don't have any complaints about the service from JoePilot.

I'm thinking about getting a Kindle Dx and just D/L them straight from NACO at $1.60 each.

VFR: 6 subscriptions x $9 x 2/year = $108 (I need 4 for michigan alone)
IFR: 4 subscriptions x $6 x 6/year= $144 (morons at the FAA jacked the L charts around so I need at least 4 charts if I go anywhere but west)
Approach plates: 3 supscriptions x $7 x $6 x 6/year = $252

NACO:
6 x $1.60 x 2 = $19.20
4 x $1.60 x 6 = $38.40
FREE from Airnav/AOPA

In one year I've paid for the Kindle.

Me too. They're discounted, and shipping is free. Plus, if I order additional charts, I can specify if I want the current or next cycle. If next, they'll ship them with my subscription.

Now for plates and AF/D I subscribe directly from NACO. No discount, but shipping is still free, and I get the mid-cycle updates on the plates.

Hmm just checked the NACO site. 1 year sub (7 editions) for approach plates are $30.03, and it looks like free shipping. That comes out to $4.29 per book shipped. That ain't too bad....

This would work fine for IFR charts, but VFR charts - which depend on color for lots of things - would be much less useful on the black-and-white Kindle. I thought about going this route, but decided not to.

Coupled with a current 430 database, I'm not too worried. The big color issues I see for out here would be class B vs class C airports, and class D vs class E airports, and MOAs vs R/P-airspace - all of which are easily determined by looking a bit closer at the chart. Even during my private training I would make b/w photocopies of the sectionals and use for my route because it was easier to manipulate an 8.5 x 11 than it was the whole foldy thing.

mypilotstore.com is pretty sick. There's no discount on the AFDs there, and they charge for shipping, so its better to order those from NACO....which I'm doing.

Hooray internet bargains!

We sell folded charts at cost (read: 40% off), and they usually take 3-7 days to get to you -- this is at wactac.com. We just started doing it, and we're not perfect at it yet, but of 200 orders, I think we've goofed up on 3 of them and made it right either by refunding the order, offering free charts, or just uprating the shipping options on-the-house.

For book products (AFD/TPPs), they're so heavy that they cannot be economically shipped, even via media mail, unless you're buying a lot of them. The local FBO is the way to go if you need them "now", and the NACO subscription service is pretty good for recurring subs, based on the free shipping.

Personally, I am in favor of supporting the local FBO, but NACO is making that increasingly difficult (which is why we started selling them at cost to begin with -- so the FBO could still keep stock and not be penalized the full 40% by switching providers) -- so your options are getting more and more limited for this stuff.

$0.02 :)

I wish I had seen this before I ordered from mypilotstore. I'd rather give business to a PoAer if possible.

Blegh.

Arg, me too. I had Sporty's up in another tab to get charts, then saw this thread and decided to go with mypilotstore.com. Wish I would have refreshed.

I use Joepilot.com too, mostly because they're a local pilot shop at KLNS, but I've had no complaints so far.

I used them for several years; got charts late a couple times when I was leaving on a trip. They claimed they go them late. Couple times, they sent the wrong chart, but in general, they were very good.

Best,

Dave

Well, I would love to order charts from someone as entertaining as you, Mike, especially since you fly an exceptionally excellent aircraft, but what's the payoff for you all selling at cost? Is it to get folks "in the door," so to speak, to buy other stuff when they need it?

I get sectional/TAC/AFD subscriptions from Airways (joepilot.com) in LNS. Cheap option (reasonable discount on charts) and easy shipping.

:D Heh, Spike, we're the spiteful sort, and don't go quietly, but rather kicking and biting -- and when NACO told us our existing volume of $2,500/yr was insufficient to remain a dealer, we decided (since charts are 100% returnable for credit) to make a go of it on a mail-order basis and order a fat stack of everything in the catalog. NACO makes it no-risk to try, and they were gonna kick us out anyway.

Long-term, what I want to do is be a distribution hub for these charts and deal to the little FBOs and flight schools nationwide, so that they can keep a supply on-hand. So we're gonna be doing this for a long time. We will keep the retail side as an offshoot, but I wanted a "sneaky back-door" for little FBOs to maintain their standing orders.

We make about 5-10 cents on average on the shipping and handling. Not on every shipment -- some we lose money on, but in the aggregate, we are slightly ahead. Sorry, I know it's skeezy eBay-style logic, but there you are. It's not all charity and spite.

Also, remember, at 40% markup, we are preserving our existing $2,500 in business by keeping our ability to distribute charts locally at our FBO. That alone pays for a lot of our idle time spent shipping and ordering charts. Since we already had idle manpower, there was no overhead. I spent a day writing up the web tools, the shipment tracking tools, and the google interface, and the thing runs itself. (being a computer nerd rocks)

It's just the sort of "idiot businessman" I am, I suppose. A revenue stream preserved is an opportunity to grow later, and if nothing else, will make us interesting connections within our little GA industry. I've never regretted any pilot I've met yet. It's really the cream of the crop in our society right now.

And no worries on the guys we missed -- we'll be around for the next cycle. :D

(rant off.. heh!)

How's the shipping? Cheap and/or reliable?
Shipping is free with NACO, and almost always shows up 5-7 days prior to the changeover. The two or three times in almost 20 years they didn't get it to me in time, they overnighted replacements at their expense. "If you can find a better service, buy it." [adapted from Lee Iacocca]

Ahh, I'm sorry, I meant "Airways."

Good to know about NACO though, since I'll be ordering AFDs through them or schmookeeg when I order next.

Ah. OK, well I never mail order from them. I find I'm up at LNS often enough that I can get what I need for out-of-area flying, which almost always happens with sufficient notice to wait for an otherwise-planned visit for lunch, the avionics shop, a Grumman fly-in, a formation get-together, etc.

I found the Airways/Joe Pilot people prompt in their shipping -- I got charts from them in 5 days or so (this was awhile ago) -- they're in PA, and I'm in CA, so I think choosing based on proximity may sway odds in your favor if you're time-sensitive :)

I believe in supporting my local FBO too- but they are always out of stuff 2 days after the update. I use the POA calender to know when the next AFD is going to be available so I go in and buy one before they are all gone.

I need a chart out of the local area for next month- I'll give your site a try- the prices look good...

Been ordering (standing order) from JoePilot for over 5 years without a single problem. YMMV.

Hmmm, you're the 2nd person in this thread to say that about Joe Pilot. That had not been my experience which is why I dropped them. I often, not once in a while, would not get my charts from them until a day or three after the change over. Twice they had put the wrong charts in the box. For the shipping it is not like I live in a place where shipping is hard to reach. So I don't know what the issue was. But I figured I gave them several times and was unhappy.

I've used vrotate.com for years. They sold out to someone in
California I think .. but still seem to do a good job. I just have them
send me what I need as they change. Then I don't have to chase
them down each cycle.
