Optimum altitude for crusing small aircraft

The optimum cruising altitude for my Champ is about 1000' AGL.

Same for my Hatz. I just gotta watch out for that 1200' tower 10 miles east of the airport...

All I know is below the terrain elevation really slows ya down.
