Question...why did they fly west? Is it because they flew closer to the equator, and the winds aloft there generally blow east to west as opposed to our jet stream up north that blows west to east? I’m guessing on this, as it is the only reason I could think of. I would have thought that flying west to east would provide (as an overall average) the greatest tail wind advantage.

To qualify as a circumnavigation I believe they had to cross the Equator twice during the flight.
